J Muir wrote rote in nn important page in is Da Count County education By ROBERT ALVIN MOSS As the graduation exercises were being held this month I was reminded of the first ninth grade graduation In Davis County Bountiful ul In 1907 I There were 26 students principal principal prin prin- prinI I cipal Leo J. R Parrish The classrooms classrooms classrooms class class- rooms were In the Stoker School building i it t has since been bee n somewhat remodeled THE CLASS photograph shows the styles of the times The girls had long hair neatly arranged in various ways They wore long skirts white blouses with high collars and some wore wore- button shoes The boys wo wore woree r el dark suits high white while collars and their hair was full but neatly trimmed on the sides sides' I and back and the neck was shaved Thirteen of the 17 boys had their hair parted In Inthe inthe inthe the middle The principal had his hair combed in the s same sam a m e style Prior to 1907 the eighth grade was the occasion for forthe forthe forthe the diploma On May 10 1907 however the ninth grade stole the show and the eighth was just another lower grade THE FOLLOWING year in 1908 some continued the their i r studies in Salt Lake City but most of us went to the L D S Business College We used the railroads f for o r transportation i ion o n the Oregon which Is Isnow Isnow isnow now Union Pacific and the Bamberger which was a small train that ran from Salt Lake to Farmington Lagoon The time for catching the B Bam Bamberger a m- m berger was am a.m. at the station which was Second West and Second South in Bountiful Since this was a farming community community com com- most of the boys had farm chores horses milk cows chickens coal and wood for the stoves I was one who had such chores and for me It was a run for the train from I Imy my home at Eighth East and Fifth South to the station statton which was more than a mile Students from West and South Bountiful came running In at the same time all of us out of breath whether It was spring or after struggling through drifts t t s 0 of f snow SEVEN FORTY-SEVEN years later 1954 I sent letters to the ninth grade students en of th this 1907 class suggesting a reunion They were located in places from New York to Calif One was in England and one was reported to be in Central America Replies were received from all the living members except the one whose address seemed to tobe be in Central America In the search I found that in the 47 years that had passed nine of the original 28 had died Fourt Fourteen en of the 19 Ii living Ying attended t the e reunion history Some borne ome local residents are arc no now socking seeking to ha have haye e a school named after him |
