The Lone Peak Conservation Center and Nursery, run by the state of Utah, produces a variety of tree, shrub, and grass seedlings for use in conservation plantings. “They are perfect to attract wildlife to your property, protect your home and farm from winter’s winds, stabilize an abused hillside, or provide your property with a source of firewood, posts and other wood products,” forester Jason Johnson of the six-county area said. The program, once known as the Family Council, has been defunct in Sanpete for about two years, according to Bonnie Nordell, a Manti resident who hosted the meeting and who has several children with disabilities. Kessler and Nordell say the program has been inactive due to burnout of parents (the same people were doing all the work), and because of the distance people throughout the county would have to travel to attend gatherings. However, they are making a concerted effort to bring the program back to life. “Parents [of disabled children] need to know that they aren’t alone, that there is a link there, that there is support,” Kessler said. They also hope to increase the community awareness of people with disabilities. “There’s a need to get the awareness out there. We’re looking for volunteers and ideas,” Kessler said.
