The Templars started the tournament on a high note with a 44-35 win over the Enterprise Wolves in the quarterfinals on Thursday, but then lost their semi-final game against the South Sevier Rams by only one point, 35-36 on Friday. In the first game against Enterprise, the Wolves doubleteamed post player Sili Hafoka, which left Kassie Tucker open to put away seven shots from the outside on her way to producing a game-high 18 points. While Hafoka was guarded closely by up to three wolves, Andrea Litteral stepped up and grabbed a game-high six rebounds. She also had four points. McKenzie Whipple’s quick hands produced four steals for game and dished a game-high of three assists. Tucker and Whipple were named as players of the game. In the semi-final match against South Sevier, the Templars led most of the game and were up by four points with only two minutes remaining. Manti turned to their stall game to run down the clock, but it produced two quick turnovers. The Rams took full advantage of the turnovers, and with only 14 seconds left, a 3-pointer from Megan Forbush gave the Rams a narrow victory. Sili Hafoka had a game high six rebounds, tallied 16 points and was named as the player of the game. Candalyn Kjar led the Templars in assists and had six points. Off the bench, sophomore Kelsie Johnson made eight points for the Templars. On Saturday, the Templars played for consolation against the North Sevier Wolves. The Templars started all three of their seniors; Holli Harman, Karen Johnson and Lori Jonson. The seniors were hungry for a win and came out in full force, outscoring the Wolves in the first quarter 9-3. Lori Jonson made five of the nine points. The Templars kept the wolves at bay, and went in to intermission tied, 18-18. In the third quarter, the Templars struggled to get position and box out, which allowed North Sevier to pull down offensive rebounds for second-chance scores. The Wolves also started to double team Hafoka in the third quarter. These strategies combined gave North Sevier a fivepoint edge. That, along with 17 of 22 foul shooting for the Wolves gave them the 43-37 win. Sophomore, Sili Hafoka had the leading score of 14 points and 13 rebounds. She was also named to the 2-A All-Tournament Team. Lori Jonson, played the last game of her high school career, and produced several turnovers, sunk two 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Kelsie Johnson played aggressively for the Templars and fouled out in the last few minutes of the game. “I am very proud of my girls and how they played in this tournament and throughout the season,” said Templar head coach Jim Nelson. “This team has a lot of heart and I am proud of each and every one of them.” The Manti Templars will lose three seniors this year, but many key players will return. “We will have a great team next year as well,” said Nelson, “There are some promising freshmen coming up and along with the young Templar strong sophomores, we are very excited about the next few years.” Snow men face pivotal games in conference after defeating Dixie By John Hales Staff writer EPHRAIM—With two important wins against the Dixie State Rebels last weekend, the Snow College men’s basketball team has won five series against Scenic West Athletic Conference opponents, saving the sixth and perhaps toughest of all—the College of Southern Idaho—for last. CSI currently holds first place in the SWAC, but the Badgers have a chance to take the lead when they meet CSI this weekend; and if the Badgers play against CSI the way they played against Dixie, they may well do just that. The Badgers doled out sweet revenge to Dixie, who defeated Snow earlier in the season, by winning 70-58 on Friday and 67-55 on Saturday, in games that displayed Snow’s best playing of the season. On Friday, Snow played an allaround complete game characterized by two “A”s: athleticism and awareness. Earlier in the season (immediately after two of Snow’s losses, in fact) head coach Jon Judkins said that his team didn’t have any standout athletes like some other teams. But Friday, the Badgers proved that any one of their starters—and several from the bench— were as athletic as anyone else in A9 Sanpete Messenger-Gunnison Valley Edition PHOTO COURTESY GARY CHIDESTER Badger Casey Winters busts a move on a Dixie player on his way to the basket. Snow plays for a chance to host the conference tournament this week in Twin Falls against CSI. the conference. The Badgers maintained a pace and style of play that sometimes looked more like the acrobatic troupe Cirque du Soleil than a basketball team. They were faster on the transition than they generally are, but didn’t sacrifice control for quickness, something they have been prone to do in the past. Snow had a court-awareness that made their offense difficult to defend and helped their defense cause several time-clock expirations for Dixie. An effective offense designed by Judkins contributed to the win, but Judkins singled out the defense for praise. “We changed up our defense so they didn’t know what we were doing. They thought we were playing a 3-2 zone defense. We weren’t. We confused them.” After control of the tip off and some quick points by Dixie to start the game, Snow’s fate seemed unsure. But an authoritative dunk two minutes into the game by Snow’s Casey Winters quieted all fears. And other players—each of them—followed suit to make at least one outstanding play apiece. Brandon Sholly had 13 of Snow’s points for the game, followed by Winters with 12, and Moses Hawkins and “The D.H.” (Dan Henry) with ten each. Saturday saw more of the same, but somewhat more subdued. Judkins says that wasn’t only because they were tired from the night before. “Dixie didn’t pressure us as much [Saturday], so we could do our normal thing,” he said. He said that the keys to the weekend wins were rebounds, taking care of the ball, and Snow’s change-up defense. Looking ahead, Judkins says that he thinks his team is peaking at the right time for end-of-season and post-season play. Snow has to win both games against CSI to take the conference title and host the SWAC tournament, and Judkins is confident the Badgers can do it. “I think the pressure’s on CSI. They’re at home and they’re not supposed to lose at home.” ‘I’ll Be’ is theme of Gunnison prom The Junior Class at Gunnison Valley High School will have their prom Saturday, March 5. Another key to the Templar win was good free-throw shooting. Thompson led all scorers with 11 points, followed by Josh Hugentobler and Salanoa with eight. On Friday, the Templars found the going much easier en route to a 59-45 victory over the Juab Wasps. Of course, the game was much more Manti’s speed. The Templars cruised to a 90 lead with baskets by Salanoa, Thompson and Frischknecht, and one of six 3-pointers by Josh Hugentobler, who scored a game-high 25 points. Josh Hugentobler hit three consecutive 3-pointers midway through the second, which he topped off with an old-fashioned 3-pointer after a strong move in the paint produced two and the foul. Manti took a comfortable 3316 lead into the half. Manti’s defense was also in top form; the Wasps didn’t score 20 points until 4:08 of the third period. Thompson contributed 12 points and Salanoa followed up with 11. In an interview Monday, coach Hugentobler talked little about the boys’ defeat against Juan Diego, and focused instead on the fact the team made it to the finals at all. Coach Hugentobler talked about injuries: Salanoa’s separated shoulder to start the season and the fact that he taped up 11 ankles for the championship against Juan Diego, and personal problems for the boys: Josh Hugentobler suffered a bout with pneumonia last summer from which he never quite recovered, and deaths in families. “I’ve faced more crap this year than in all my previous eight years combined,” he said. He added that the boys’ courage and fortitude was inspiring. He said that when something went wrong, the team responded with, “We can fix this. Let’s fix it.” According to coach Hugentobler, this year’s squad is about diversity and determination and is a special group of kids. “We’ve won 17 games. We won the league championship,” he said. “These kids never questioned. When something went wrong they battled back,” he continued. “These kids never gave up. They never turned their backs on each other.” SALINA AUCTION CLASS DATE: 2/22/05 HEAD COUNT: 816 AVG.
