Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A4 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition IN OUR OPINION ... TO THE EDITOR... Basing economic development in Manti is good move For many years the Sanpete County Office of Economic Development and Tourism has been hidden away in a small office in the Technology Education (TEED) Building Center on the Snow College West Campus. Former economic development director Sally East worked hard to promote the county, and we commend her for her efforts. But we believe her out-of-the-way location impeded the office’s public visibility. We are pleased that the county commission has voted to bring the economic development and tourism function into the sunshine. It will be moved to Manti, the county seat, and located in the Old City Hall on Main Street in Manti. Besides being a premier artifact of Sanpete history and culture, the Old City Hall is directly across the street from the County Courthouse. The new location will put the economic development staff in closer touch with county government. Besides office space for a new economic development director and staff, the Old City Hall houses a wellequipped tourist information center. It is the only such center located directly on U.S. 89 in the corridor proposed for designation as the National Mormon Pioneer Heritage Area. Wednesday, March 2, 2005 The daily presence of economic development personnel will allow the public more access to the museum and other attractions in the Old City Hall. Now the county commission needs to close the circle by deciding what type of economic development structure the county should have. One proposal is to appoint a strong volunteer board. The board would have veto power over selection of an executive secretary or director to operate the office day-to-day. A strong board with the right leadership could be a tremendous asset, especially if board members were willing to do some of the work—to write grants, woo businesses, represent the county at state and national meetings, etc. But whether the title is director, administrator or executive secretary, the county needs a literate, resourceful manager of East’s stature to run projects day-to-day. And the manager needs at least a part-time secretary. Some of the grant funding for economic development salaries has been cut off. That poses a tough challenge for county commissioners. We hope they can find necessary funding so that economic development, one of the most critical functions of county government, does not get short changed. — PETRO-HUNT — GROUP 69 S. Main, Manti, Utah 84642 835-8945 OR TOLL-FREE 1-866-345-0027 _____________________________ One of America’s oldest privately-owned and most successful oil and gas exploration companies is currently buying oil and gas leases in Sanpete and Sevier counties and would like to add yours to their growing list. If you are a mineral owner in this area and would like to discuss leasing your mineral rights to an experienced, tried and true operator, call us for a fair and consistent offer at 435-835-8945 or toll-free 866-345-0027, or come by our local office at 69 S. Main Street, Manti 3/2,9,16,23GMS Letter sent from Moroni resident to Utah Power & Light The enclosed photo with a date of Dec. 22, 2004 is the same pole as the photo I sent to your office more than a year ago. The photo date is clearly printed on both photographs. Since our electric power comes from this power line, I am very concerned about why maintenance is not being done on this pole and several others in this area! When I saw a commercial last week on Channel 5, KSL in Salt Lake City, about how good your maintenance work is, I wondered why our area is being ignored. I would think to maintain the poles in a more reasonable and timely fashion, would be less expensive than paying for commercials, and then still have to maintain the poles anyway. Also, wouldn’t the company be opening up themselves for lawsuits when the neglect of the poles is so obvious? I suspect that not doing the “preventative maintenance” is a chance that some company officials are taking to make the “year end profits” higher. The maintenance commercials may fool some into thinking that the company is doing its proper maintenance for reliable electric service. Those of us who can see the leaning poles are not going to be fooled, especially when we have taken the time to carefully document the problems and wait patiently for corrections to be made. If the company refuses to maintain its facilities to provide reliable electric power, even during storms or adverse weather, that would survive if the maintenance were up to standard, then the customers have the right and duty to see that negligence is corrected. What corrective action, with a timetable, will the company pursue to assure its customers reliable power? Thank you for listening to our concerns.
