Show Dr Fishbein's Health Talks BY DR MORRIS FISHBEIN The conduct ot of your family life de de- p pencils a great deal on Its freedom from illness and fatigue This problem is so great that It has concerned not only physIcians but and psychologists and andall andall all those responsible for maintaining the status of our civilization SInce the mother is usually the cen ter ot of family life Ufe the condition of her Is probably fundamental She is really the engineer who runs the family machine the father no doubt being the provider of the fuel for the operation machine and the remaining members of the family those who benefit by Its operation If Ie the mother is constantly overworked over over- worked constantly fatigued and constantly con con- driven by stress and straIn all family relationships are likely to suf- suf fer The food ma may be inadequate the clothing of the thc other members ot of the family not in proper repaIr or in a proper state of cleanliness th the home itself disordered and disturbed g 9 Furthermore constant physical strain is bound to reflect itself in mental irritabilIty and thus bring about dissension and nervous response on In the part ot of all members of the family All aspects of the health of the mother are intensified by certain pee pe- nods in her life During the period of child bearing and during those functional perIods when the womans woman's entire physIology changes stresses and strains are arc likely to be severe On such occasions it is the duty of the other members to guard the health ot of the family b by taking from her such burdens as may be assumed by them and avoiding mental clashes which leave those involved exhausted and trembling mother has passed middle age she should have a physical examination ex- ex at least once each year to detect any of the physical changes which threaten her ll life e. e Such a complete physical physical examination examina tion is made with a view to finding as soon as possible the results of wear and tear on the heart and on the kidneys and also the possibility of tumor tumor tu- tu mor growths In the breasts or in the organs concerned with childbirth It has been n definitely established that such precautionary examinations will save vast numbers of lives and in addition will prolong gre greatly Uy the liv lives of many women While the health ot of the mother Is exceedingly important It must be realized that many a father carries his own burdens within his own mind and avoids sharing them with other members of t te e family Particularly in times of financial depression de de- on is the man ot of the family who wants to appear successful and leader leader- l like ke to those who depend upon him likely to keep his burdens a secret Jf If the mother and the children are anxious to conserve the provider as long as possible in a state of health which will permit him to do his Utmost ut Ut- most they must anticipate stresses and strains and do their best to help and relieve A real family life Is one in which each member realizes his own and carries them fully I |
