F vs-r vs j by 63 Zona Landau iI TV l. t. t Pius Whirlwind Soldier a celebrity student at is a Native American 5 Born in South Dakota he heis is a member of one of the ten bands of the Sioux V 1 Americans the people of the prairie Whirlwind Soldier a surname is an earned name It came from his grandfather grandfather grandfather grand grand- father who earned it as a War Chieftain A name is given to identify himself as a person through a picture word said He earns the name which reflects a mans man's true character and his total being The name Whirlwind connotes action motion something that one cannot see or grasp The name 1 Soldier refers to the chief of the council The wisdom of the council cannot be seen but only the results of its action Whirlwind Soldier believes that just because Christopher Columbus made a mistake in naming the peoples whom he discovered living here in the Americas when he thought he had discovered India was no reason to label the Native Americans Indians He believes that all Native Americans should be called by that name Whirlwind Soldier is of his it has down through the i A very proud heritage as come I leaders and well known chieftains in American history He very strongly believes the Native American has been and is still a great influence in establishing America V as a fr free country and certainly in developing the country in the beginning The English and the French had to learn from the Native American by living on the theL thet L t natural food of his environment mainly the buffalo Now sai said l Whirlwind Soldier the immigrant those coming into this country from the European countries and other countries have made the Native American dependent on them taking away the Native Americans American's freedom and personal responsibility for their own livelihood l. l He said When you take away a mans man's manhood you take away his reason for existence Whirlwind Soldier has a gut- gut grit a firmness of character feeling that the Native American has become an oppressed people Is in direct opposition to the American Constitution which is r to give liberty and a good life to all Pius Whirlwind Soldier was raised and educated on the reservation in South Dakota His schooling during elementary years was at the Reservation Boarding School He went through his 4 years of high school in Rosebud South Dakota and V then to BYU and Black Hills State College while working on a double major of Psychology i V Psychology and Sociology with a minor in B Business iness Administration tion At the present time Whirlwind Soldier has been at since September 1983 and will wiIl be graduating in June of 1985 with an Associate of Applied Arts in Building Construction He is maintaining a 37 grade point average He was a work-study work student and wanted to find a college that would give him an opportunity for job placement After much inquiring decided on mainly because he learned of the instructors' instructors concern for their students One of the reasons for the change of his major from philosophy to construction was his disappointment in the little progress of society in the field of humanities He soon realized that in order for a person to sustain himself in our society the V individual needed to be trained to use his brain and technical knowledge and be skilled as well Whirlwind Soldier said Better to apply both mind and hand with the technical knowledge rather than the psychological reasoning in creating a reason for ones one's existence 7 J.
