papers the result of an examination made by geo K chase an officer of the department of justice was sent to your committee the examination aini nation covered a very short period and related only to certain specific charges made by a former subordinate of marshal Al murray urray the charges were sustained by oral and documentary evidence the officer directed to make the examination so reported to the attorney General who thereupon wrote to marshal murray damandi demanding D his resignation ign atlon in response thereto john 31 harlan then the attorney of of murray now a justice of the supreme court of the united states t came to washington to save have his client from disgrace ane the result of mr garlans Har lans visit was an arrangement by which murray was allowed to resign as if of his own motion and the letter of the Attorn attorney ev general demanding his resignation was was not mot only withdrawn but the records of the department of justice were butil abed by cutting from the letter book the recorded copy thereof it was also stipulated that the papers showing the result of the examination made by chase should not be placed on onalle nnie nile the object of this extraordinary proceeding could have been none other than to shield an offender in whose interest powerful powerful political influences had been brought brought to bear the records of the department of justice are not mutilated and official papers kept off theofiles the niles files for trivial causes the papers sent to your committee we were reexamined examined by mr balim an expert of the department of justice who testified that they disclosed irregularities in the accounts of marshal murray and frauds upon the united states george K chase the officer who investigated vesti gated the charges against murray and who reported them sustained appeared before your committee and testified tidied that the evidence he obtained established murrays Mur rays guilt that the attorney general
