"The style of rock n roll is going to change soon. It used to be toe surf, then the English style of yelling and screaming came in really strong but even toe Beatles have begun to change to a more quiet sound. "Eventually toe trend will go back to a more smooth rock n roll instead of this really wild and loud sound, he continued. 1 have a feeling that toe trend will go toward jazz, but there still will be rock n roll, piped up LonnyNordbourg, 17, junior at Highland High School. "Rock n roll is wild and that is what the teenager is, he continued. "Adults hear rock n roll and they say they dont like it, but there mustbe something in it or it wouldnt go over. There must be something great about rock n roll because it has turned over the whole world. "I like rock a roll, but I would like to become a jazz continued Loony, drummer, who plans to work himself through college playing toe SKETCH After 17 Garry Eagan, 19, wears a beard not because he is a rebel without a cause, but because he likes it. Because I wear a beard, people are always asking why I havent been picketing, he snorted. "I have worn a beard for years for no real good reason other than 1 like a beard. cant say Im trying to identify with anyone. Garry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Eagan, 1663 Roosevelt Avenue, has the philosophy: "It is the average person who can become great. The really successful person is the one who makes use of what he has. How does Garry feel about the boiling pot of high grades and success? Parents dont realize that there is not too much room at the top. Some kids work just as hard for a C as others It is common sense that we arent all work for an A. born with brains. 'People have failure mixed up with average or mediocrity. Teenagers are forced to do well and they have no understanding of failure. The standard is turned around. People are goal oriented toward the image of Kennedy or others. People Just dont understand that teenagers are people. "Because of the high pressure upon good grades there are too many people who are working for grades and not for knowledge. There are guys with a 'C average who know more than a guy with an A average," Garry continued. Garry, who is a bright aspirant for law school and a sophomore at the University of Utah, had his ups and downs in high school. Despite his less than average grade point in high school, Garry came to full flower in college with an above 3.5 average. "Too many people work for just grades and the grade point average has become the Almighty God, bitterly And I -- asserts ' "High March 31, 1966 drums. Therefore, I had no prrtlera making the switch from high school to students for coUege High school should prepare the college socially. "In my opinion there should be three classifications for grades.. ..passing, above average and below average. One of the biggest problems Garry is experiencing is the dilemma of the 17 to 21 year old.. ...they re old enough to fight our wars, but not old enough to be recognized as adults. lack of something with "After high school there is which to identify. I think the teenagers between 17 and 21 years old are border cases and are searching for identity. f Either these teens can go up or down they can regress with the 14 and 15 year olds or they can associate with the 21 year olds, but problems will arise if they shove themselves up. When you're 16 The striving for age never stops. you want to be 17. and so cm. But the biggest Jump is from 17 years old to 18 years old. The day you reach 18 years old, if a teenager does something wrong you go from the detention home, to jail, then to the army. Does Garry feel youth are trying to grow up too early? "I dont think youth are trying to grow up too early. There is a desire for maturity, but we should be offered the food for our maturity. "Some people have good ideas, but there is no way to carry them out. A great many teenagers are responsible. In the future we are going to have to carry the burden of what adults are doing now, but adults are pushing out individuality. How can this be prevented? Garry states, A group should be organized that could become involved in teen affairs and give the teenager something to believe in.... but someone has to take the big step. "We don't have our George Washington to light the torch, but the day will come. And through this some way will arise where the teenager will be able to wort with toe adult group. All the members of "The Group attend high school and they find it hard to go to school and keep up on their playing engagements. Now fcey practice three times a week and often count their performances as practices. i , Speaking out on whether teenage girls idolise young singing groups, Lonny says, In a small town, the girls scream at you and it gives you a tingling feeling and makes you feel like youve something . accomplished Maybe this is because a small town doesnt have too many groups and a larger town has so many. "Teenage girls like about anyone who is in a group, states Brook. "Once in awhile we have people ask us to sign We kinda autographs. chuckle. What about a group of teenage girls? Could they become a hit on the teen scene? As states Loony, "I once saw an all girl group....! thought they looked ridiculous. To keep toe attention of toe audience, we give a variation of fast songs. Every group has a song which can always bring toe audience back, says Brook, "We like to start with something sudden, because it is toe first and last impresssion that lasts. We try to gear our show to the first and last numbers and we pick toe less popular stags that we can do well for these two spots, Roland quietly added. Every group has its own technique. Some use different lighting effects, routines in coming. Jn And going .off the stage and toe way they present the song. "We like to go back to toe records that arent too popu lar and put our own techni ques into them.
