Malnarich has spent most of his life as a guide in the vast Selway --Bitterroot Primitive'1 Area of Idaho and Montana. A few years back he and a pair of clients were discussing toe business of catered hunts. It. was generally agreed that guides and outfitters could use aj little grooming. . The list of unfilled Jobs for men with toe skills of a ; ; packer and guide is longer. Trained men are needed in every big game hunting state in the U.S. and Canada. Alaska, king of them all, has high official praise for this enterprise. The interest has been so "I great there that a Malnarich school is being established at the L Den DeHart Ranch near Slana Via Gakona. Erv believes that men in his industry need to be highly skilled persons who can provide first class service. Demands being made on them are increasing and the established out-- f fitters are in need of capable help. There is also plenty of i room for new hunting establishments in our big game areas. ' The school has been established In the hope that these needs can be satisfied. Upon acceptance toe student receives a copy of what is ' probably toe most comprehensive manual on hunting, shooting and packing ever written. He completes an intensive' written course based cm toe manual then goes to the Mai- -; narich ranch for training. This phase of toe v school, lasting two weeks, makes Marine boot camp seem like a daisy-picki- ng f party. He learns to ride, shoot, stalk game, pack mules, skin and dress game animals, cook, shoe horses and mules and ? many other skills. His most important training is learning to be a diplomatic leader, skilled in the delicate business of ' keeping people happy. Erv believes a hunt can be successful even if no game is ' killed. The key is comfort and service. In order to graduate cum laude, the student must show he has plenty of capability along these lines. Students are drawn throughout toe United States. Many have never seen a horse. A psychology journal editors son from Oslo, Norway, will be a student this summer. Erv has made hunting his life. Most of it has been spent j in the wilderness, but theres not a smoother, more friendly and able diplomat in the entire U. S. State Depart- ment. i His road to professional success has been made a bit ' smootor with toe help of his wife, Ardie. Through the years, she has assumed the responsibility of bead camp ; cook on hunts and has seen to it that clients have received 1 nutritional and appealing meals.
