Show FROM WASHINGTON rile President on the Utah Situation Situa-tion If c Expects SomctHiug Ittorc than Protest Special correspondence of the DKMOCBAT WASHINGTON April 7 1885 All we have in Washington this morning morn-ing in regard to Conference I enclose also an article fron the Horning Post Mr Taylors complaint of the programme of the prosecution in selecting the prominent prom-inent Church members who are provided pro-vided by the Church with able counsel instead of the humble followers is not calculated to raise him in the public esteem Another item which provokes discussion discus-sion and amusement and leads to the belief that the head of the Church has lost his head is that in regard to the infernal regions Hell they say is not a place for trying cases but for the guilty a sort of penitentiary of last resort re-sort The President does not feel unkindly toward the Mormon people He spoke more in kindness than in bitterness and realizes the difficulty of treating a subject in which religious feeling and belief fig ure He is disappointed however He had had hoped for something more sensi ble conservative than has vet been received Some action from within were his words which would lessen rather than increase the necessity for strong measures something different from the proposed resolutions of pro test I do not propose now to dipcuss what transpired at an interview kindly and politely granted 1 beg to say this much however if this Conference or the leaders at this Conference do not now or soon show some disposition to comply with the law they will miss their oppor ttinity The President is a quiet agreeable agree-able and pleasant gentleman That he is also a cool sensible and determined man all who know him admit and those who know him and the country at large will find it out in good time It was sug gested that possibly the leaders were waiting the decision of the Supreme Court in the jury case and hoping for a favorable opinion and temporary relief Since the receipt of the within telegrams telegrams from Salt Lake are enclosed with tl1 letter there was nothing to do but to discourage the expectation of any action from that quarter Help from within if at all can only be expected from the young men or the conservative element in the Church As I reached the head of the stairs this morning after the interview a lively scene was being enacted at the foot where the usual crowd of callers were t I collecting The gentlemanly usher was blocking the ascent and having a circus with something that since I have had time to think of it must have been that nondescript Mary Walker I had but thirty minutes to meet an engagement and could not see it out but heard the usher say as I squeezed through the crowd You must take your turn It sailed in lively I have neither time nor disposition dis-position to argue the matter he said You can go into the East Room or out of the house It stuck its nose in his face and snapped out Dont you be insolent in-solent sir Dont you be insolent reI dont mean to be lie tried to be mild but he was excited evidently and mad through and through and indeed he was not to blame A red rag to a mad bull would be nothing in comparison to being fretted by such a thing as a Vassar graduate would say She is just awful Zion has its afilictions but thank the Lord it has not a Dr Mary Walker Col Lamont the Presidents accomplished accom-plished private secretary has cause for action against the illustrated papers They made him look like a Baltimore plugugly Knowing something of the man 1 puzzled over the picture and gave it uj lie is young and not uglynot so handsome perhaps as Ulahs Governor or late Marshal or commander of the Nauvoo Legion few are you know nor near so large but like Mercutioe wound he will serve C R B |
