Show A COMMISSIONERS VIEWS What Judge Carlton Thinks of the President and Mis Attitude Towards Utah Utah Commissi9ners Carlton and God frey arrived from the east last evening and other members are expected tonight to-night The Commission will be in session ses-sion as soon as a quorum is present A DEMOCRAT reporter tins forenoon called on Judge Carlton to learn the news from Washington Judge Carlton said he did not like the interviewing business because be-cause it so often happens that what a man says is colored so by the reporter that a wrong impression is given but he said he did not like to be discourteous to the press and he would make a statement state-ment if the reporter would be sure to get it down right You saw the President at Washington Washing-ton asked the reporter Yes three times The last inter view was in the presence of all the members mem-bers of the Utah Commission and Secretory Secre-tory Thomas and it was pretty protracted pro-tracted The Presidents part of the conversation con-versation was principally in asking questions ques-tions which were responded to chiefly I by our chairman But other members also participated in the conversaton A pretty full exposition was made of the condition of affairs in Utah and the operation of the Edmunds law Can you give any of the statements made by the President in that conversation conversa-tion I cannot repeat them verbatim Time fact is we did most of the talking ourselves our-selves The President made no very striking or significant remark He is a good questioner and a good listener My inference from the conversation was that he thinks that polygamy is morally socially so-cially and politically wrong that it ought to be < and that the 1 in suppressed laws in relation thereto should he fully and efficiently executed But he did not say this in words Indeed that would have been superfluous because it is his duty under the Constitution to take care that all constitutional laws shall be faithfully executed j and this law has been decided to be constitutional Did the President express any opinion about the Mormons or of additional legislation legis-lation lationHe He did not Was anything said in that conversation conversa-tion about appointments of officers for Utah7 UtahNothing Nothing that I heard Was anything said by the President or the Commissioners about a Legislative Commission for Utah There was not As I stated most of the talking was don by our chairman and he and all of us appeared to thin that it was proper to confine our remarks to topics suggested by the President What impression did the new Presi dent make on you That he is a very levelheaded man and does not slop over about anything |
