Show A SENSATION Df COURT Orson P Arnold Pleads Guilty to the Charge of Unlawful Cohabitation Cohabita-tion and is Let Off with a Light Sentence When the April term of the Third District Dis-trict Court was called this morning Mr Yarian stated that he desired an arraign I ment to take place before the Grand Jury was impaneled Orson P Arnold indicted by the last Grand Jury then came forward and the voluminous document charging him with the crime of unlawful cohabitation was read to him Mr Arnold leaned carelessly against the judges desk while the indictment was being read and when the clerk had concluded the usual question Are you guilty or not guilty was propounded Guilty was the response and the plea created quite a flutter of excitement Mr Varian stated to the Court that Mr Arnold desired immediate i sentence ana tHat lie nan myeBugiiieu ms case urn was convinced that he intended hereafter to live within the laws and use his moral influence in their support Mr Varian joined with the prisoner in requesting the leniency of the Court Judge McKay also made a few remarks on behalf of Mr Arnold lie stated that he was informed and believed when it i became apparent that the defendants family affairs were likely to be investigated investi-gated he called his two wives and their children around him and told them if i any of them were called as witnesses to state the truth the whole truth and nothing noth-ing but the truth In this case there had been no evasion of service or trifling with oaths but the defendant had acted throughout as became a man Under these circumstances he cheerfully joined in the request for as light a sentence as the court could impose T1 ry r h n juugu AUIIU uiier examining me indictment in-dictment stated that the statutes imposed im-posed a penalty of a fine of not more than ij300 or imprisonment of not more than six months or both In the opinion of the court this punishment in view of that imposed for polygamy was rather light Before passing sentence he desired to inquire in-quire whether the defendant proposed to continue the practice of unlawful cohabitation cohabi-tation That is not my intention your Honor responded MY Arnold I propose pro-pose to obey the laws of the United States hereafter and intend to exert my influence on the side of the law I shall support what I call my second family but shall not live with them The court stated the purpose of this law was to protect society from the commission of the crime of unlawful cohabitation to protect the innocent by punishing the guilty The prisoner prison-er proposed to cast his influence in suppoit of the laws That was a noble purpose j as an American citizen a man could take no nobler course The court thought in this case the law would be satisfied by light sentence A fine of 300 would therefore be imposed Mr Arnold drew forth the amount from his pocket and paid the fine on the spot and was discharged As he was leaving the court room a gentleman was heard to remark Tally one convert for the missionary judge |
