CHARLESTON, W. Va., Aug. 30 Secrotary Daniels, speaking here today to-day at tho breaking of ground for the government armor plate and projectile plant, declared that America is fighting fight-ing not only for the democratic nations na-tions of the world, but Is waging "tho battle of the people of the Gorman empire themselves." "Germany began this war for 'a place in the sun,' " said the secretary. "It has conducted It with the Idea that it must havo the place In the sun and the only place. We believe that there can be no place In the sunshine for any nation on earth underneath the oranious shadow of the Russian eagle, no sunshine even for tho people of Germany Ger-many themselves. "Let thero be no fear that rumors of peace or possibilities of a cessation of the struggle will cause us to remit ono! moment our activities on sea and on shore," he said. "Not until the peace treaty Is actually signed will we remit re-mit one single item from our program of preparation. Our citizens need have no fear that we will be lulled Into any relaxation or deceived by the mirage mir-age of peace which is no peace, into slackening of our activities." Navy to Bring Peace Mr. Daniels asserted that "in preparing pre-paring for a terrible war the navy is taking the surest means to bring about an early and effective peace." The secretary declared that the government gov-ernment had been dilatory in providing provid-ing for its. war needs. Had attention been given -tq tho far-sighted' advocates advo-cates of preparedness, ho said, tho country would not havo entered the I war with wholly inadequate facilities. |
