J Dr. Q. I have something called periodontal disease. 1 didn't even know I had it. I have had no pain and my former dentist didn't say anything. What do 1 do about it and is it even that serious? A. Periodontal disease is an infection in the gums and the bone around your teeth. It can be very serious se-rious and should be aggressively treated either by your dentist or a specialist called a periodontist. Periodontal Peri-odontal disease has been linked to a number of serious seri-ous health conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, lung disease, osteoporosis, gastric ulcers and pre-term low birth babies, not to mention premature prema-ture loss of your teeth! So please don't delay getting treatment of this serious seri-ous condition. It is very common to have little or no symptoms with this disease so just because you did not know you had it does not make it less serious. See your dentist today!!
