Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, January 25, 2007 Springville High School musicians featured at Side-by-Side Concert with Utah Valley Symphony Local students of several sev-eral of the Utah Valley Symphony will be joining the orchestra in their performance per-formance of the Franck "Symphony in D minor" at their January 24 and 25 Side-by-Side Concert. This special concert pairs promising students with symphony members as stand partners who obtain ob-tain first-hand experiences participating with the orchestra. or-chestra. The concert, consisting entirely of French composers, compos-ers, also includes music of Faure and Poulenc. Kirsten Madsen, oboist, daughter of Grant and Delia De-lia Madsen is the student of Martha Sargent, longtime long-time oboist of the Utah Valley Symphony. Kirsten also participates with the Springville High School Chamber and Philharmonic Philhar-monic Orchestras, and the Springville High School Symphonic Band, all under the direction of Annelise Hatch, and the Rocky Mountain Wind Ensemble that is lead by Christian Smith. Tanner Croshaw, cellist, cel-list, the son of Steven and Rhyll Croshaw, is the student stu-dent of Cheryl Skousen, a cellist in the Utah Valley Symphony. He is a member mem-ber of the Springville High School Chamber Orchestra and also enjoys singing choral music. He sang the bass part in the Barbershop Quartet of "The Music Man" that was produced by the Springville Spring-ville Junior High School Drama Department. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is soon to receive his Eagle Scout Award. Big band dance in Mapleton Saturday Everyone in the community is invited to the Winter Win-ter Wonderland Dance Saturday, Jan 27, in Mapleton starting at 7:30 p.m. The event will feature the Moonlight Serenade Ser-enade Band playing music from the Big Band Era and will be held at the new Mapleton City Center. All citizens who like to dance or listen to great music from the 1940's and 1950's are invited to wear their best dress, tux or ball gown and come and enjoy the evening. "Betsy never worries about acquiring the necessary nec-essary points for teacher relicensure because she continually attends conferences con-ferences and workshops, reads materials, and studies stud-ies to improve her repertoire reper-toire of skills and knowledge knowl-edge about teaching and learning," said Huff. "Betsy is a great teacher of adults. She is a mentor men-tor to all teachers at the school, but is particularly a life-saver for new teachers. teach-ers. She is the favorite ESL teacher for those teachers who are enrolled in the district's dis-trict's ESL Endorsement classes." Ferguson is an adjunct instructor at BYU in the Second Language Acquisition Acquisi-tion Theory course, where she willingly shares all of her materials, methods and expertise. According to Huff, Ferguson Fer-guson is an avid yard sale junkie, who has accumulated accumu-lated a great assortment of fabulous teaching materials ma-terials which she makes available to all. She is also addicted to collecting children's chil-dren's books, along with the plush book characters, which she willingly displays dis-plays on top of the library shelves at Westside. "Teaching children is an obvious talent for Betsy. She works her magic with students as she unlocks their potentialities and helps them to learn and grow," said Huff. As staff developer at Westside, she also teaches a giftedtalented pullout program for students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades. She teaches problem solving solv-ing and research skills and uses authentic learning as she guides students in creating cre-ating real-life products. Ferguson is an able advocate ad-vocate for children. She has rare insights into the challenges children face because of her own childhood child-hood experiences. She grew up as an extraordinarily ex-traordinarily bright and gifted child. She spent much time tutoring other oth-er children and shelving books in the library when teachers didn't quite know what to do for her. She also experienced great teachers who saw her talents and gave her opportunities to continue her own growth through challenging curriculum. cur-riculum. She is a great advocate for gifted children, and growing up as the only child of a struggling single parent, Ferguson has great empathy for children from impacted families and from poverty. This summer she will return re-turn to Ghana, Africa, to work as a volunteer in an orphanage, where she also teaches adult literacy in the evenings. "Nobody walks, talks or works faster than Betsy Ferguson. She sets the pace for all who try to follow fol-low in her footsteps, but it is certainly challenging trying to keep up with her," said Huff. "One of Betsy's greatest talents is that she brings out the best in everyone she meets; she helps other magnify who they are." She is master at technology, master mentor and master mas-ter teacher. She even plays the guitar and is a talented singer and actress. "She is a powerful example exam-ple of the best in education.
