Selea Nielsen, Jessica Bills, and Tia Smallcomb, from left to right, have been the driving force in getting a recycling program started at MJHS. It is a win, win situation at Mapleton Jr. High Karlee Kirkham MJHS STAFF WRITER Have you ever walked down the hall or the street and just been disgusted by all the garbage and paper lying all over the ground? I know I have. And if you ask me, it's DEFINITELY time to change, starting with our schools. That's why, at Mapleton Maple-ton Jr. High School, we're starting a recycling program. pro-gram. Even though we're only collecting paper and flattened cardboard, we'll be doing a lot of good for the community and raising money for our school. Besides, Be-sides, it saves trees! It may cost money to buy the recycling bins, $249.20 to be exact, but every ton we recycle will be worth $15 for our school. Just about any kind of paper or cardboard can be put into the bins. Things like junk mail, office paper, pa-per, phone books, colored paper, magazines, newspaper, newspa-per, cardstock, and etc. The way our program will work is that we'll put one recycling bin in each class and large ones in the YOUR ONE STOP SHOP FOR ALL YOU HEALTH ESSENTIALS! 1 ! There are approximately 35 weeks in a school year, and if our school recycles one ton of paper each week we'll make $525 each year. If we recycle two tons each week we'll make $1050 per year! That's a lot of money! It's a great way for students stu-dents to get involved in the community, help them to not guzzle up so much paper, pa-per, and to really feel like they're making a difference! differ-ence! Only one out of five MJHS students actually recycles at home. Having this program will make a huge improvement. We also ask that any businesses or homes in our school area recycle to the big bins that we'll have right outside the school. All in all, this program is a win-win situation; raising money for students, saving trees, and ultimately helping help-ing the environment! 3337 mm Upcoming First Annual Science Fair at MJHS Heather Esplin MJHS STAFF WRITER Plans for the first annual an-nual Mapleton Junior High School Science Fair are well underway.
