Show The Funeral of Bishop OConnor OMAHA June 3Special telegram to TIE HERALD Undoubtedly the most HIALDrndoubtedl impressive im-pressive and the largest attended funeral procession ever witnessed in the west was that of the late James OConnor bishop of Omaha Monday even lag The procession did not start from the episcopal residence until 030 and it was nearly S oclock before the body vas deposited in the catafalque built ex iresslj for the occasion midway between the two aisles in St Philomenas catho dral Immediately the body reached the vestibule Vicar General Cheeks assisted by Father Glouber gave absolution to the dead prelate then came the solemn offices for the dead which lasted fully threequarters of an hour Solemn pontificial high mass was said this morning in the cathedral all the sisterhood sister-hood and Catholic children being present Tomorrow morning the burial willtake place Archbishop Ryan of Philadelphia officiat ing as celebrant Bishops Kenrick Ireland and Marti who were expected to arrive tonight to-night assisting in the services to a singu arly gifted man Tickets of invitation have been issued to the friends of the dead bishop and already there are signs that the cathedral will not begin to be large enough for the invited guests I is thought that upwards of one hundred priests and five bishops wil participate in the final absolutions tomorrow to-morrow In the procession last evening though the heavens were hung in black there were 1000 marching men from all the Catholic societies in the Catholc city besides very many carriages A well laid plan was formed last night by two unknown parties to wreck the Overland Flyer due at Omaha at 910 by turning two switches and putting out the lights but the plan was discovered in time to avert what would otherwise have been h1e a terrible disaster There is no clue to the perpetrators of the deed a boy of eighteen eigh-teen having discovered the plan to wreck the train One of the heaviest rainstorms Which has passed over this portion of the west for a number of years visited Omaha last night doing great damage to property Governor Thayer issued a proclamation yesterday rescinding his former proclamation proclama-tion calling the legislature to meet in extra session This is regarded as a triumph for the politicians |
