Show A HEADERS OBJECTIONS He Takes Exceptions to the Remark Made by Professor Stephens To the Editor of THE HEKAIJ Permit me to make an emphatic protest against what I consider au uncalled for and Inexcusable insult to the parents of the children who sang at the festival matinee on Saturday last I cannot express the surprise III might say indignation Ifelt upon reading the Dramatic and Lyric column of my SCXDAY HERALD at those words credited or rather f a i ° charged to Mr Stephens in relation to the parents of the 1000 children I want tosay that oi all the causes outside out-side of his own energy that have contributed contrib-uted to raise Mr Stephens to the proud place he occupies today as a conductor there is none which has been BO powerful as the children of Salt Lake I His earliest work and that which gave him his start in this city was his labor in the Sabbath schools and when he was comparatively unknown here the little children and their parents with whom the proud professor is now so oat of patience rallied to his support and gave him his first start towards popularity If Mr Stephens could have visited Vole homes of the 1010 children Saturday morning ho would have seen nearly five hundred mothers in the midst of the work and worry of the weekly housecleaning laying aside their work until afternoon to spend several hours in getting their little boys and girls ready to go and add ono more laurel to the wreath which Mr Stephens so proudly done And yet he is not satisfied with this but because those hardworking and faithful mothers did not leave their days work until night or Sunday Sun-day morning and the fathers did not leave their employment and purchase tickets at 50c or 75c each and attend the matinee he feels nothing but disgust and indignation I consider it a poor return for tho faithful faith-ful and disinterested work the little folks have done for Mr Stephens for him to gratuitously insult their parents Should ilr Stephens over become a parent himself he will learn that there are other duties to perform besides preparing prepar-ing children for concerts and when at the sacrifice or postponement of some of those duties and with the outlay perhaps of some hard earned money he sends them off to help bring success to a musical conductor con-ductor he will perhaps not find it so easy to supply the demands of his family that ho can afford to pay 1 or 8150 for tickets for himself and wife for the concert at which his children sing gratuItously I trust Mr Stephens did not mean what he said when bespoke as reported to Dramatic Dra-matic and Lyric but if he did I hope the parents of the noble 1000 willTemember it the next time they are asked to devote their time and means to furnish him a chorus of children childrenONE ONE OF Ell |
