Show The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Editorial Six Tuesday. November 14, 1989 Florida judges wise, especially regarding women) You can say a lot of things about the sorry state of the justice system in our country, but don't fault our judges. These, are men of integrity who know a right from a wrong when it bites them on the nose. And who can dish out an appropriate sentence when it's needed? JudgeWilliam Bollinger of the West Palm Beach, Fla. County Court is a case in point. number of prostitution cases sashaying through his Faced with the ever-increasi- ng court, the benevolent official is attempting to mix a touch of creativity with the legal process in order to help curb business for the world's oldest profession. Bollinger's novel approach to the problem involves bringing men who are accused of soliciting prostitutes into court to appear side by side with the woman in question as an option to facing the usual punishment. One might initially question the wisdom in such an action, but the judge's eloquent statement , reveals his infinite genius. "I want them to see these women in the light of day under the fluorescent lights in the courtroom," he explained. "Some of these women look like they've gone through the wringer." In other words, his aim is to put these skanky broads under some lights like greasy popcorn at the movie theater to reveal them for what they really are. It seems only obvious that, after examining the objects of their passion in the light of day, these wayward men seeking animal passion in the heat of the night would instantly realize their mistake. Why, they probably didn't even realize they were dealing with a prostitute during the events of the night before. They were undoubtedly just looking for a good time with a nice girl. One shouldn't even think about having pity for the woman being paraded as nothing more than an unsavory piece of meat in front of the court. It was in Florida! of course, that a judge recently decreed that a woman could be legally raped if she was "inappropriately" attired. And judges, after all, are the people we look to for wisdom in our society. lit mm fefi f j) ,N i know Ken Southwick- Responses to 4 hundreds of thousands of East Germans who've poured over the border into West Germany as socially irresponsible, r and greedy s wanna-be'capitalist turning their backs on their country. Legitimate frenzied antics of the news media to George Bush's president a form without substance I teach English to students whose first language is other than English. In class, I've tried to illustrate the importance of the relationship between form and substance, the ideal being a perfect harmony of the two. Last Thursday our class went to "Redford Goes to College" sponsored by the Hinckley Institute. I expected the students to have an experience that could provide jthe basis for some interesting writing. I did not anticipate the brilliant object lesson on the dangers of form without substance provided by our ASUU president, Molonai Hola. The Fine Arts Auditorium was packed beyond capacity with people and press anxious to see and hear Mr. Redford. At the appointed time (about 10 minutes late), Hola approached the podium, his athletic physique well groomed and clothed in a smart sports coat and tie. He radiated an aura of competent leadership, which momentarily allowed me to forget rumors of illiteracy and forgive errors of the past. Then President Hola retrieved a sheet of paper, struck a crooked stance and began reading a prepared introduction. I was at first embarrassed, then amazed, and finally appalled at the level of incompetence Mr. Hola was able to display by merely attempting to read. Never looking up from the text, he used incoherent phrasing, random pronunciation and even, had difficulty saying "Robert Redford" correctly. Rumors of questionable literacy were substantiated, errors of Jthe past were partially explained, and fears of a. student administration motivated by the need to "endorse something" and a desire to maintain the form and image of leadership were confirmed. Molonai Hola epitomizes the dangers of form without substance. I admit to having warm feelings about last year's administration. Mike and Grant had their problems, but I cheered their open farcical rebellion against formalities. I respected their administration of substance within the form of our democratic system. I'm confident that too much money will be spent, political rhetoric will be xeroxed, leaflets and hot chocolate will be distributed and band-wagowill be joined.
