Show Sports The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Ten Tuesday, November 14, 1989 Ute netters face BYU for major indoor berth after three tournaments. Six By Loren Jorgensen Chronicle Assistant Sports Editor When the University of Utah tennis team plays BYU in a dual match tonight at 6 p.m. in the Eccles Tennis Center, it will be a no win situation for the Utes. Yes, the Utes can, and probably will, win the match and hence the region's berth in a national indoor team tournament in February. But they're supposed to, and if they don't, well... "It's a hard match for us because we have everything to lose and nothing to gain," said Coach F.D. Robbins of his Utes, who are the top rated team in the region. "We will have more pressure on us because we're supposed to beat them. I don't think BYU is as strong as us, but they're not bad. If they play good and we play nervous, we could be in a little bit of trouble." Robbins feels the Utes might be a little uptight because the automatic berth to February's Volvo ITCARolex Indoor Team Championships in Louisville, Ky. will hang in trie balance. "It's a lot easier to play when there's nothing oh the line, but this is important because berth to the national tournament is up for grabs," Robbins said. "In the national tournament, the top 20 teams in the nation will be there and each team is guaranteed at least three matches. It would be a good chance to get some national recognition." The match will be the first dual match of the year for the Utes, singles and three double matches will be played. Utah will be led by Johan Hogstedt in singles and the Brendan regional weekend qualified Bowyer, who won championships last and have already for the individual national indoor tourney. The top match of the night will ' be a rematch of the regional final Saturday when BYU's Johnny Mattice and Hogstedt will meet in No. 1 singles. This will be a rubber-matc- h between the two, as Mattice defeated Hogstedt in the finals of the University of Utah Invitational in October and Hogstedt won the match Saturday. At No. 2 singles for Utah will be 0 Bowyer, who will likely play BYU's George Chingas. Bowyer defeated Chingas in the third round of the regional last Thursday, which was one of the reasons Robbins chose him'to 6-- 2, play No.' 2." 6-- .iStipiip mmmmmm right now, but Brendan beat Chingas last week, so I think I'll play him at No. 2," Robbins said. In doubles, the team of Entzel and Bowyer will play in the No. 1 spot, while Tenlen and Lindeman will go at No. 2 and at No. 3 will be the tandem of Hogstedt and Reilly. Robbins was pleased with the showing the Utes had in last Action continues to heat up for intramural bowling teams, with the Bowl Shitters and Alley Quakes dominating opponents and floor hockey teams are entering the final week of regular season competition. Bowling: Tuesday standings have the Bowl Shitters leading the field with a 17-- 4 record, followed by the Pi Kappa Alpha team at 15-- 6 and the Two For The Money bunch has third place to themselves with an 0 mark. There is a two way tie for fourth place with Hjelm's Team and the Lag Factor bunch sporting 2 records and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon 1 team is looking to start winning. Turning in top team efforts have been the Bowl Shitters 11-1- 9-1- hmm h-- L Well, it's a little more than halfway through the regular NFL season and fans across the nation have had more than enough to cheer and jeer about. In Dallas fans have been in a huff for quite some time now, but have only recently tasted the bitter fruits of woefulness. In Minnesota fans have been holding their breath for most of the season, waiting for a winner that has been promised but may never come true. In Buffalo, like Minnesota, fans have been told that a Super Bowl champion is eminent; but is it really? In Phoenix the Cardinals began the season with a bang, but have struggled. In Los Angeles football fans have two strange teams to worry about The Rams are well, the Rams. A bunch of guys as fickle as their fans are. The Raiders are getting a little weird too, not knowing whether to be winners or losers. J " V " ' . " . - 1 . The true nightmare in this story is . Chief runner Christian Okoye, commonly known as the Nigerian Nightmare. Okoye, a Nigerian native, has only been playing American football since 1983. He labored for a few seasons in relative infamy. But since the ground-gam- e loving Marty Schottenheimer took over, Okoye has become he NFL's biggest success. The sad part of this story is that Okoye's success hasn't been enough. The Chiefs may well be on the right track (having picked up a viable quarterback, Steve Pelluer), but bad breaks and a few silly turnovers and the new and improved Denver Broncos have left the Chiefs at 4-- 6, good enough for third place in their division. THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY: This story belongs to the Cowboys who have seen it all this season. Some things (and there have been a precious few) that have been good: The overall play of rookie quarterbacks Steve Walsh and Troy Aikman, the play of defensive specialists Eugene "the hitting machine" Lockhart and Jim Jeffcoat and the Herschel Walker trade. The bad: The whole team's ability to sustain a lead, or for that matter a drive, the team's overall 9 record and Coach Jimmy Johnson's haircut. The ugly: The way the Cowboys won their first (and only) game this season against the Redskins, the way the new ownership handled the Tom Landry firing and the surley attitude of the Dallas-are- a sports press. THE NATURAL: This one is the story of John Elway and the Broncos. The Duke may be a natural and 1-- players like receivers Mark Jackson and Vance Johnson and rookie Bobby Humphrey may be also, but there's another side to this Natural thing. It seems Elway is a Natural at. getting people to dislike him. His latest problems stem from some comments he made in the heat of stardom. It seems that the Denver press is treating the star QB like fleet street treats the Queen. The press reported that he's a heavy drinker who leaves bad tips among other things. In fact, just after Halloween one paper reported what Elway and his wife Janet gave out as a treat. Maybe the press has gone too far, but maybe Elway's toothy grin and (usual) unflappable arrogance just plain tick people off. Despite the turmoil, Elway and the Broncos have amassed a league- best 2 record. Watch for more NFL epics coming to a cheap theatre near you. 8-- 1. Notre Dame (57) 2. Colorado (3) 3. Michigan 4.
