Show 16 Signpost Tuesday, May 20, 1986 Track team hopes for a few breaks in MWAC meet by Mike Coe Sports Editor In last year's MWAC conference track meet, Weber went in as one of the favorites. , ft V ? 1 ; '. f I h 4 V I jv u u i ' i 1 1 J ' 7 V Signpost photo Oscar Sosa Wildcat distance runner Michelle Green is shown leading Montana State runner Molly Tritle in a 5,000 meter race last week. Tritle will be one of Green's major obstacles in her search for three MWAC titles. May events planned (cont. from page 15) The NAC team still has an outside chance at the trophy with a 350-point total. There are also five men's teams vying for the championship in their category. The Veterans have a sizeable point lead with 1,000. Behind them are the Pack with 700 points. Three men's teams are tied with 600 points: Beta Theta Phi, the 7th Ward and Omega Psi Phi. In the Co-Recreational category, ACM is currently enjoying the top spot with 700 points. Typhoid Marys are alone in second place with 600 points but are closely followed by the LDSSA and JSA with 500 points apiece. Sigma follows up with 400 points. The last team activity where team points can be earned is a softball tournament which will be played on May 28. There are a possible total of 600 points which can be earned at this tourney. Among the intramural activities still planned for student, faculty and staff participation this spring are a 5K run, a softball tournament, an archery competition, a campus recreation photography contest and the state softball intramural championships. This will be the second year in a row WSC has hosted the state softball tourney which will be held on June 6 at 11 a.m. on all the campus softball diamonds. But, beset by injuries, illness and disqualifications, the women Wildcats were relegated to a close third place finish. This year, Coach Jim Blaisdell hopes the misfortunes of last year won't resurface. "Right now, I'd say that Boise State is the favorite." Blaisdell then added that it ought to be a close battle for second and third place between the University of Montana and Weber. But though Boise is the clear favorite, Blaisdell says, "If the girls perform like they are capable of, and Boise has a sub-par day, we could have a shot at it. But something would have to happen to them (Boise) for us to have a chance." After Boise State, Univerisity of Montana and Weber State, Blaisdell thinks it will be Montana State, Idaho State, and the University of Idaho battling for places fourth, fifth and sixth. Portland State and Eastern Washington are expected to bring up the last two spots. For the meet which will be held in Moscow, Idaho from Wednesday to Saturday, Blaisdell will take up a contingent of 15 track and field athletes. Freshman Teri Okelberry and sophomore Sheila Price will participate in the heptathlon competition which starts on Wednesday and concludes on Thursday.Currently, Okelberry has the second best point total in the MWAC with 4,835 points, 81 behind the leader. Price is fourth with 4,348. Blaisdell feels that Okelberry has a good chance at winning the heptathlon, saying, "She'll have to perform well, but she can do it." With the heptathlon competition getting over with on Thursday and the other track and field events not starting until Friday, Blaisdell has the added luxury of running Okelberry and Price in individual events. Besides the heptathlon, Okelberry will do the triple jump, where she has the second best jump in the conference (37'2.75); the javelin, where she is also second in the conference (153'8); and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:03.14). Price, meanwhile, will do the 100-meter hurdles (15.07), the triple jump (36'0.75), and the long jump. In the long sprints, the 200- and 400-meter runs, Weber will have freshmen Lucky Ikoh and Stephanie Clements. Ikoh is the school record holder in the 400 meters with her time of 55.23, the second fastest time in the conference this year, while Clements is right behind her at 55.48. In the 200, Ikoh also has the second fastest time in the MWAC (24.43). According to Blaisdell, both Ikoh and Clements have a shot at winning the conference title in the 400. Ikoh's chances for the win were hurt, however, when she strained a hamstring a couple of weeks ago. But, Blaisdell noted that it "looks like things are going pretty good." In the middle distances, it once again looks as though two Wildcats may battle for the conference title. Both senior Camille Tueller and freshman Dana Willie will double in the 1500- and 800-meter runs. Tueller has bests of 4:31.24 and 2:12.70, while Willie's bests are 4:35.64 and 2:13.65. Taking on one of the toughest challenges of anyone in the meet will be Michelle Green. Green will triple in the meet, running the 10,000, 5000, and 3,000-meter events. Her times of 35:20.77, 17:03.80 and 9:47.53 make her one of the favorites in each event. Blaisdell said of Green, "Michelle will be doing one of the toughest triples there is. She should definitely win the 10,000." Another favored to do well in the 5000 (17:29.54) and 3000 (9:55.02) will be Wildcat Becky Wayment. Also running the 3000 will be Mari Green who will double back in the 1500-meter races. Wildcats Mary Honholt and Melinda Smith will both run the 10,000 with Honholt doubling back in the 5,000. Sophomore hurdler Sharon Morrison will look to pick up some points in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Over in the field events, Weber will be led by high jumper Paula Pettingill. Pettingill's jump of 5' 10 in the BYU Invitational a few weeks ago is the best jump in the MWAC so far this year. Also expected to do well will be shot putter Robin Taylor, who set the school record of 41 '6.5 last Wednesday. Rounding out the squad for Weber will be triple jumper, 400-meter runner Debbie Mackey. Manning the 4xl00-meter relay for the Wildcats will be Morrison, Clements, Price Ikoh. The 4x400-relay team will consist of Tueller, Clements, Okelberry and Ikoh. Blaisdell belives that his team is in the right frame of mind for the meet. He said, "In the meet last week at Pocatello, the girls really competed tough. We knocked off some favorites from Montana State. When I've put the pressure on the girls and told them it was time to perform, they did." Blaisdell also thinks that the misfortunes of last year are firmly behind him. He says, "Anything that could go wrong, went wrong (last year). Who knows, maybe this year we will get some breaks and maybe some crazy things will happen to other schools." If one of these schools happens to be Boise State, Weber just might come home MWAC champions.
