Show Volume XIV Issue XVI The Ogden Valley news Page 17 June 1, 2007 Drivers Encouraged to “Drive Truck Smart” The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Motor Carrier Services Division is continuing its educational campaign to encourage drivers to “Drive Truck Smart.” It’s important for drivers to understand that it’s important to consider semi truck drivers out on the highway. Commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) behave differently than passenger vehicles. There are blind spots to consider, and CMVs may not be able to stop and maneuver the same way as standard automobiles. Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA) research shows that 75 percent of Utah accidents involving both commercial motor vehicles (CMV) and passenger vehicles were the fault of the auto drivers. FMCSA data shows there is an 81.7 percent greater likelihood that Utah drivers age 26 and younger will be involved in a non-fatal CMV crash than their peers nationwide. “As part of our Commercial Vehicle Safety Plan we saw the need to help educate young drivers on ways to drive safely and courteously around commercial motor vehicles,” said Rick Clasby, Motor Carrier Services division director. “We have received an incredible amount of support from the trucking industry as well, receiving national recognition from the American Trucking Association and other states that want to utilize our educational materials,” said Clasby. “Our goal is to reduce the number of deaths resulting from crashes with commercial trucks by 41 percent across the nation by 2008.” UDOT offers the following tips on driving safely around trucks. INSPECTOR cont. from page 1 licensing of drivers, and load limits. Butler will carry portable scales for weighing trucks, or can require that trucks are run to local shops for a weigh-ins. Malan commented that the equipment inspection program in Weber County has been in affect for about five years, and was designed to improve safety on our roads and highways. “The bottom line is . . . we aren’t focusing on the number of citations we write, we just want to stop violations before they even occur. We want our roads to be as safe as possible.” LAND TRUST cont. from page 1 imperative that we implement smart growth principles and preserve open space for future generations. I also believe that the Valley is a unique treasure, and that many areas need to be protected to ensure the sustainability of critical wildlife habitat, water quality, community viability, and superior recreational resources. There are so few places like the Valley that are left anymore. Fortunately, as we have evolved, so has our appreciation and understanding regarding our tenuous relationship with the greater environment, and the need and importance of being responsible stewards of the land and its intrinsic values. It also makes good economic sense to maintain our general quality of life to ensure future community sustainability and successful economic development. “The OVLT is in a primary resource and tool to ensure this sustainability. It is a key element in providing the protection of critical natural resources in Ogden Valley and elsewhere within the state. Board members have a stake in conservation, and a genuine concern and love for the area that stems from their personal ties to the Valley and what it represents on a greater scale.” For more information on the Ogden Valley Land Trust, or a personal consultation on how a donation or partnership with the land trust can enhance your estate planning or development plans, contact Carla Wiese at 510-6139, or Board Chair Jim Hasenyager at 745-2048. The Ogden Valley Land Trust is non-profit 501(3)(c) organization recognized by the State of Utah. It has been operating since 1998 and currently oversees the conservation of nearly 6,000 acres located within Ogden Valley. SHERIFF cont. from page 1 As a Community Resource Officer for this area, he will attend town and community meetings throughout the Valley, as well as various special events held during the year. “I look forward to meeting members of the community, and serving this region of Weber County. In addition, Lieutenant Jeff Malan has been assigned as the administrator over this precinct. In the past, the Upper Valley Precinct fell under the command of a lieutenant who also commanded a portion of the lower valley. This change now allows Lt. Malan to focus solely on the needs of Ogden Valley. The second change is the addition of another Sergeant to this precinct. Sgt. Bob Johnson will now share the uniform patrol duties with Sgt. Hadley. Their scheduling allows for one of them to be on duty seven days a week. In addition to their patrol responsibilities, Sgt. Hadley will continue to coordinate special events and supervise community policing functions. Sgt. Johnson will coordinate Boat Patrols on Pineview Reservoir and coordinate patrols of the 1. Acknowledge that trucks don’t drive like cars and prepare to treat them differently. 2. Don’t linger in commercial trucks’ blind spots—both on the sides and behind. Specifically, if you can’t see the trucks’ mirror, then the driver can’t see you. 3. Give commercial trucks plenty of room to brake. 4. Allow commercial trucks room to move on the roadway. www.jenniejdesigns.com 801.391.2959 Rachel Kramer ~ Local Artisan 6:00 AM Wake up call Sgt.
