Our Valley students took the challenge. I really appreciate the opportunity I had to serve and be involved with these students and teach music to the youngsters in the local schools. It is called “String Masters” and I am currently trying to get distribution from bigger music publishers. And thanks to the kids for all their patience; there were no page numbers in these books! It was a year long work in progress, with lots of edits and rewrites. Believe me, there will be page numbers in the final copy! A big thanks goes to graphic artist Zena Manley for doing the art work in the book. I had a very large class to teach with rehearsals three times a week. I salute my helpers Sue Hansen, Suzanne Barilec, Sandra Jenkins, and Sean Healey; and student teachers Addison Brown and Aaron Krishnan. The end of school year concert was held on Wednesday, May 16 at Snowcrest Junior High School with the Valley Band playing Regal March, and Anasazi. The Beginner Orchestra played Au Clair de la Lune, and Beethoven’s Song of Joy with the Guitar Ensemble. The Valley Advanced Orchestra was featured on Staten Island Hornpipe, and Swallowtail Jig—both dance tunes. The rest of the concert showed off the combined orchestras along with the Guitar Ensemble playing Gospel Medley, which is an arrangement of Rock-A-My Soul; Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; and Amazing Grace. “Old One Two,” an original fiddle tune that I wrote, and also my arrangement of StarWars highlighted violin soloist 6th grader Allison Ziegler who played on the electric violin, and soloist cellist 4th grader Andrew Phelps. Also at the concert, “Twinkle Awards” were presented to Valley students Noelle Roskelley, Sarah Arave, and Allison Ziegler for original music variations they created for the evening’s performance of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Special Surprise Awards were presented to high-commitment student violinist Lizzy Knowles, and guitarist Cashe Rumsey. A big thanks goes to Tommy Lee principal at Valley Elementary; and Brent Broome director of Valley Band, and director of music at Snowcrest Junior High School.
