Instead of being supported on a massive foundation, found-ation, the tower rests on a ring-shaped ring-shaped masonry base, with an inner in-ner diameter of 24 feet 3 Inches, exactly the same as the inner diame-eter diame-eter of the tower. The tower is about 177 feet high, and in 1829 is said to have been 14 feet 5 inches out ol plumb; since that time its inclination has been increased by an additional 0.0055 foot per foot of it3 height. Jn 1834 an earthquake caused a deflection of about five inches. |
