Photo by Charles Lowery Wrestling or seas For the second time this season the coaches have voted Paul Harmer as the Varsity Outstanding Wrestler of the week. He is showing his abilities abili-ties by defeating his opponent from Dixie and taking first in the Taylorsville Tourney last Saturday. It is exciting , to watch his aggressiveness and determination. Congratulations again Paul!!! This week there was a tic for the JV Wrestler of the 'Week. Darrel Small received the vote for filling in at a varsity var-sity weight against dixie and pinning his man. This is the second time that Darrel has received his award. Congratulations!! Congratu-lations!! Melvin Attwood also receiving rec-eiving the JV Wrestler of the Week for his win aeainst Dixie and he had a win at the Taylorsville Tourney. Melvin defeated both of his opponents with his favorite throw the head-lock. Congratulations Melvin! Last week the coaches gave some recognition prior to the Dixie match to the parents of the senior wrestlers. They would like o take the time to again-express their appreciation apprecia-tion to all the parents. The coaches would also like to express their thanks lo those who came and supported the team by coming out to the Dixie match. The last dual meet of the year is against one of SHS's hottest rivals, Spanish Fork. The wrestlers have anticipated anti-cipated this match and are really attacking their practice this week. It will be exciting to watch, so come and support them Thursday. Paul Harmer Darrel Small Iff -... . :p rr - v I.,,. iarrt S " V 7 Devils lose in squeaker to Dons Battling for first place in Region 8, the 2-0 Springville Red Devils played a hard-fought hard-fought game against the Spanish Span-ish Fork Dons who are ranked No. 1 , losing by two. Springville jumped out to an early lead and controlled the game. Both coaches felt the devils outplayed the Dons in the first half. Leading 12-10 after one quarter, then erupting erupt-ing on a 1 7-6 run in the second period. Springville led 29-16 with 3:30 left before the half. Junior Johnny Averett hit , three 3-pointers from way beyond the 3-point mark, putting a lot of pressure on the Dons. Spanish Fork battled back with several 3-pointers of their own, but were still trailing 37-31 37-31 at the half. . Coming back from half, the Dons took the lead at 53-52 with 7:25 remaining in the game. The Dons pushed the lead to . 4 points, but the devils tied the game at 60 with 2:1 5 remaining when Matt Daybell converted two free throws. 4t After holding Spanish Fork scoreless for most of the firs quarter, and leading 29-16 before the half, the Dons went on a scoring run and it was 37-31 for SHS at the half. The game was closer during the second half arid ended 67-65 for the the No. 1 ranked Dons. Andrew Croshaw scored 14 points for Springville and had nine rebounds and six steals. He is the son of John and Karen Averett of Mapleton and grandson of Welby and Mable Warren and Jane Averett. His favorite class is History and he wants ta attend the University of Utah. His hobbies are camping, hunting, fishing and' golfing. He played on the golf team and is know for his 3-point 3-point shots on the basketball team. Down by one, Springville had a chance to win with 8 seconds left in the game. Coach Mark Bake called a play he hoped would give the Devils the victory, but before the Devils could execute it, Spanish Span-ish Fork stole the ball. Spanish Fork's Robbie Reid was intentionally inten-tionally fouled, and in the confusion, they had 6 players on the floor while Reid was at the free-throw line. Before an official noticed, the Spanish Fork player got off the floor avoiding a two shot technical and possession of the ball being given to Springville. Reid then made one of the free throws to make the final two point Spanish Fork win. Despite the loss, Coach Bake was pleased with the Devil's performance. .Andy Croshaw turned in a fine game leading Springville's scorer's with 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Paul Miner and Matt Daybell each scored 12. Johnny Averett tallied 9 with Matt Hall right behind with 8. Todd Frischknecht scored 6. .- ViX ' Senior Matt Daybell is this week's SHS Basketball Spotlight Spot-light player. He is the son of Jack and Sheila Daybell and grandson of Guy and Flora Chestnut, Rosalie Morgan and Fern Chappell. He maintains a 3.9 GPA at SHS where he enjoys Physiology and Graphic Arts. His hobbies include snow skiing, water skiing and fly fishing. January 23, 1991 - The Springville Herald - Page Seven SPORTS Lody Devils victorious in exciting double overtime gome By Marcia Conover The Springville High School Lady Red Devil Basketball Team claimed a big win Friday night when they beat the Pineview Pine-view Panthers from St. George by one point in a double overtime. over-time. The score was 64-63 for "the Devils. From the moment the game started, the Lady Devils knew they were in for a fight. By the end of the first half the score was tied. Each team got ahead of the other by six only once, other than that, it was a basket for basket trade all night. The Devils were also in foul trouble at the half with Julie Kirby and Tara Houtz both having picked up three fouls. The outlook for Springville didn't look good during the second half when Kirby fouled out in the third quarter and Dede Child went to the bench with five fouls in the fourth. The second overtime saw many turnovers and the score still going back and forth until the Devils found themselves ahead by two with 8 seconds left. A foul was called on SHS causing moans from the crowd, but the moans turned into cheers when Pineview missed the second of the two free throws and Springville won the game 64-63! Tara Houtz was the leading scorer with 21 points. She was also the leading free throw shooter with 13 shots made. Stacy MacArthur got 13 points and Dede Childs had a good game with 1 1 points. Jessica Black did an out-, standing job of coming off the bench when Julie Kirby fouled out. Black scored 6 points. The girls are 3-0 in region play and had a game against Payson Tuesday night.
