Show frage Eight - The Springville Herald January 23, 1991 rVu T-x ; y- Youth speaker invited The Future Home Makers of America Club at Springvillc High School are sponsoring John Crudele, a nationally known youth speaker to lecture lec-ture at the high school on Tuesday, February 12. The public is invited and there will be no charge. Mr. Crudele is a talented speaker who has spoken all over the United States and Canada to young people, teachers and parents about the risks of drugs, tobacco and alcohol and other issues facing youth in the 90's. His concern for young people peo-ple and their future is truly apparent according to Sara Mickelsen, FHA Chapter President Pres-ident at SHS. She and other leaders of the local club heard Crudele speak at the state leadership convention in the fall and asked him to come to SHS. Crane iVIATC Michael Crane won first place at the Springvillc Middle School MATHCOUNTS Con- test. Mike Hurren finished: second, followed by David' Bennion and Patrick Clyde. These four students will represent repre-sent Springville Middle School as they compete against the best seventh and eighth grade teams at the Central Utah Region Re-gion Competition at Utah Valley Val-ley Community College on Feb. 9, 1991. His presentations deal with youth issues of the I990's. Last year, he delivered some 500 presentations to over 125,000 people. - He speaks to youth and parents with equal effectiveness. effective-ness. He provides relevant information and statistics as well as sharing powerful stories. sto-ries. John weaves humor with seriousness to challenge and stimulate students. He informs them about the realities of alcohol and other drugs, as well as sex relationships, by sharing stories to reinforce his message that "saying no will never hurt you." Students leave his presentations with a clear sense of the value of their lives. He shares meaningful drug and alcohol prevention tactics, communication techniques, as COUNTS champ pionship held at the University of Utah. Members of the alternate team are Randy Lamb, Tom Tippetts, Rodney Jay, Damon Macarthur and Nathan Newton. New-ton. MATHCOUNTS is sponsored spon-sored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is a series of competitions (both individual and team) beginning within each school, then at the regional level, then the state level, and finally, the National Competitions in Washington D.C. The top four students, together with the coaches of the first and second place teams at the state finals will represent Utah (expenses paid) 7 to SHS well as other effective parenting par-enting strategies with parents. "What I appreciated most about John's visit was the way in which he worked with us to tailor his presentations to satisfy satis-fy the needs of the students in our district. Upon his arrival, our agenda quickly became his agenda," said Craig Collins, Principal of Geneva Community Commu-nity High School in Illinois. Crudele's experiences include in-clude being the youngest person per-son to ever speak to a general session of the National Speakers Speak-ers Assocation; keynoted the PRIDE (National Parent's Resource Re-source Institute for Drug Education) Edu-cation) World Drug Conference Confer-ence in 1988 and 1989; recipient recipi-ent of the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award in 1988 for outstanding volunteer service; and teen expert on the Minnesota Minne-sota TV program "Good Company," Com-pany," December 1989 and February 1990. at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition on May 3, 1991. The State Math Team will compete at the State Math Contest at Weber State University Univer-sity in March. The team will consist of the top nine students above plus Matt Killpack, Cody Preston, Jeff Poulsen, Jonathan Miner, Megan Kill-pack, Kill-pack, Tamara Jackson, and Rachel Penrod. Last year Springville Middle School finished fin-ished third at state. Three years ago they were second at state. These fine students could make it the fourth year in a row that Springville Middle School has finished in the top seven at state. Dennis Lundgreen, the coach, thinks "This year's team is as good as any we have had." Nearly seventy schools will send seventh graders to the State Math Contest. Good luck to the 16 outstanding out-standing scholars as they carry on the fine tradition established establ-ished at the Springville Middle -School. The Springville Middle School is one of four secondary schools to be nominated for the Presidential Academic Award from the State of Utah this year. Way to go Middle School! Learn how Parents in Nebo School District interested in learning how to raise responsible children chil-dren are invited to join free classes the last week of January. Janu-ary. They will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at Springville High School. The series of nine classes, sponsored by The Gathering Place, will teach parents how to help their children take' more responsibility, accept and obey family rules, develop better judgement, and learn to talk with parents, and cooperate cooper-ate with brothers, and feel good about themselves. The course, "Developing Responsible Children," offers free child care and refreshments refresh-ments for the children, while the parents learn more about how to be a successful parent in the nineties and how to make the job of parenting easier and more enjoyable.
