Show Continue the Work f From Washington there came yesterday an order to stop all allwork work on the reconstruction hospital at Ft Douglas This means the immediate stoppage of work on a project that gave emp employment employ employ- oy- oy ment to men many of them returned soldiers We Ve believe belie the order to fo be unjust unreasonable and unit tin un- it timely First Utah in common with all other s states at s faces t the e unemployment problem We Ve are ready to go the limit to meet It but we have a right to e expect cooperation from the federal govern govern- r r ment We Ve received nothing from Washington in the way of contracts during the war and we did not complain because we w realized that these contracts could be bett better r placed elsewhere The construction of a real hospital at Ft Douglas came to us as an anti ti ii oJ afterthought and we welcomed it for two reasons That we would zi pe be able to give encouragement t to the boys who came here to be bek beI k again into human beings and because it brought something some some- I thing new and desirable to the stated state d' d Second elimination of the Ft Douglas reconstruction hospital is unreasonable when we consider the vast number of families in r 1 the intermountain r region gion directly interested in the reconstruction of boys who went overseas If we eliminate Ft Douglas the I I nearest hospital is the Letterman hospital at San Francisco r g miles from Salt Lake City over mountains and desert and still further away from many hom homes s of the intermountain district It is unreasonable to direct that the boys who have offered their all in France France be sent so so far a way away from home during their reconstruction reconstruction recon recon- period They should be kept here centrally located where loved ones of a vast surrounding area may come to them quickly and they the wounded should not le deprived of the comfort that loved ones and the thought of being near home may bring Thirdly the order is untimely because it affects an area where curtailment of enterprise and yet I winter snows must bring a where the unemployment problem must be as acute as in any I part of the United States The government has asked us to undertake improvements because of the crisis caused by the demobilization of thousands of soldiers We vVe have met the request Y 2 by voting bonds bond to carry carryon on public work We Ve have given our approval to the expenditure of millions in the immediate future because we have realized d there is an in mediate immediate demand to fill 1 the unemployment breach In view of and in vie view of the more v vital tal consideration of the location of the hospital for we are If more willing to see labor unrest than to see a mother deprived of the opportunity to see her wounded The son Telegram joins with w hi Mayor Ferry and with other public spirited citizens in urging the if r war war department to reconsider its order halting the construction work at Ft Douglas b |
