Rachel Lisonbee, teacher appreciation co-ordinator, planned the events for the week that kicked off with an ice cream social after school on Monday followed by bagels and juice the next morning. On Wednesday the teachers enjoyed chips and salsa during lunch as well as much deserved chair massages from Broadview University. The EnergySolutions Foundation is dedicated to the promotion of math, sci-ence, and engineering educa-tion. Jill's Physic teacher Jim Clark knew of her interest to major in these areas and told her she should apply. Jill filled out an applica-tion, submitted two letters of recommendation and wrote an essay on President Obama's energy plan. Her 2,000 word essay illustrated what his plan entailed and how it differed from the previous energy plan. The EnergySolutions Scholarship is available to sophomores throughout Utah. One student is selected from each high school. Jill admitted she was surprised she received the scholarship because her other friends who applied are ex-tremely bright. Simply Splendid Offers Bistro and Boutique in One ' if J in by Jennifer Wright The Pleasant Grove Cham-ber of Commerce ceremoniously welcomed Simply Splendid, Pleasant Grove's newest bou-tique and bistro, in a ribbon cut-ting ceremony Thursday, April 21, 2011. Council Member Cindy Boyd officially welcomed owner Dana Engemann on be-half of Mayor Call to the city and the Downtown area. "I love the Downtown area," said Boyd, who shared her vi-sion with the crowd. "I hope that when we say Downtown people automatically know we mean Downtown Pleasant Grove." Boyd appreciates all the busi-nesses that take the risk and open in the area. "It is my hope that we can all work together and make Downtown a vibrant spot in the city with businesses like Simply Splendid." Simply Splendid is a bou-tique that sells crafts, jewelry and decor plus dozens of handmade treats like cake pops, cupcakes, chocolate pretzels, cookies and bars made daily by a staff of tal-ented bakers. The Bistro, the first deli of its kind on Main Street, offers artisan sandwiches and homemade soups from 11 to 2 p.m. daily. Simply Splendid also offers MTC deliveries featuring cookies and cinnamon rolls. "I'm excited for this endeav-or," said Engemann, referring to opening her boutique and bistro. "I'd like to make Main Street a fun destination point in Pleasant Grove. Visitors will find us sur-prisingly different," she added. Simply Splendid recently relocated from Lindon after looking at several locations. An-drew Engemann described his wife with one word: crafty. "She is all about crafts, crafts, crafts," said Engemann. She started out making crafts for her own line: Cleverly You, selling the line at events like Swiss Days then moved to designing the previous Simply Splendid store. Soon Dana purchased the store and moved it to its current location on 67 South Main Street into a darling vintage house perfectly fit for its new owners. Both Andrew and Dana have ties to Pleasant Grove and wanted to keep the business local. "Pleas- - Dana Engemann, owner of Simply Splendid, is officially welcomed by city officials, members of the PG Chamber of Commerce and downtown mer-chants at a chamber sponsored ribbon cutting for the new business. ant Grove is a great city to have a business," said Andrew. "We are real happy on Main Street." "Simply Splendid is a won-derful place to come," said Mary Jo Acor, longtime friend and em-ployee. "It has the 'Dana touch'. She makes everything fun." "The food at Simply Splen-did adds a touch of class to the Downtown area," said Betty Mathie. Simply Splendid is lo-cated at 67 South Main Street in Pleasant Grove. It was request-ed by Pleasant Grove residents that secondary water rates be researched to create a rate that was more equitable to the resi-dents. The best way to do this is to install water meters on the secondary water system, but be-cause of the large cost of putting in meters, another option had to be considered. The option will be dis-cussed at a city council pub-lic hearing May 24, 2011 at 6 p.m. in the bays of the Pleasant Grove Fire Station at 92 East 100 South. The new proposed rates would be implemented over a three year window starting with the first bill in July. The pro-posed rates will include a base rate plus a multiplier based on the size of your lot. Examples of the rates have been calculated with a base rate of $16.20 with a lot size multi-plier (per square foot): .000287. If, for example, you have a 10,000 square foot lot, your monthly rate would be on July 1 , 2011: Base rate $16.20, lot size multiplier (10,000 x.000287) $2.87 for a total monthly bill of $19.07. On July 1, 2012 with the base rate of $16.20, plus lot size multiplier: .000574 for a total monthly bill of $21.94. On July 1, 2013 the base rate would be $16.20, plus the lot size multiplier of $8.61 for a total monthly bill of $24.81. A large lot appeal is only available to those who have lots over one acre in size. The appeal allows you to have an engineer-ing firm determine the square footage of the landscaped por-tion of your lot. The minimum square footage of the land-scaped portion your lot size can be for billing purposes is 43,560 (one acre). The cost to appeal is $50. Pleasant Grove City will credit those who want to rent irrigation shares to the city at $3.58 per share per month or equivalent, depending on the source of the water share. This will allow the city to capture ad-ditional water for the secondary system. These rates will apply only to those who are on the Pleasant Grove Secondary Water Sys-tem. If you have questions you can contact Scott Darrington, city administrator of Pleasant Grove at For those who qualify for the property tax abatement, the city has a program to of-fer reduced utility rates. Please inquire with city staff at (801) 785-504- 5. |
