Show PERSECUTION AND JUSTICE. The Deseret News explains that no progress can be made by presecuting a sect. In one form .or another this is presented every few days, the implied point being that the more the Saints are persecuted the stronger will become their organization. or-ganization. It has the same tone that a youth of 4 years of our acquaintance put on when he explained, ex-plained, after a misunderstanding with his mother, that it was useless to lick him because it "just makes me worse." The only feature of the business worth noting is the assumption that IB1 somebody is being persecuted. IH Society rests on the acceptance by the people Hi of a Government of righteous laws, and when iB those laws are imperfect the repeal or amendment H of them through prescribed channels. When men H disobey those laws and are apprehended, that is fl not called persecution, but justice. When men in the name of a creed break those 9 laws and thjere is complaint and an attempt H to vindicate the laws, that is not persecution, but H simple justice!. When, for instance, a whole peo- H pie vote for a legislature that will in turn vote H for a candidate for the United States Senate be- H cause ho is a spiritual chief and holds only sec- H ond place in authority in a system which has H usurped a special authority over them; when the H chief purpose is to exalt, not the country, but the H Church, and free men complain over the viola- H tion of the fundamental law of the country; when H they complain and try to oust such a man, that H is not persecution,, but only justice and a measure H of self-protection.
