A few years ago, Judge Goodwin Good-win stepped out and, as the result of a sale, Perry Health appeared on the scene as the man who was going to manage the Tribune There was loud talk, and lots of it, about the way in which, under Heath's guiding hand, the Tribune was to be made greater and bettor. What , Mr. Heath, in his brief career with the Tribune, ieally did accomplish was to show how easy it is, as well as wicked, to make a good newspaper the pitiful spectre of its former self. Heath, in a very short time, brought to the verge of wreck, so far at least as good repute goes, a newspaper that had earned character and public esteem and an onviable name. Heath is through In th Tribune Tri-bune office; it can be said of him that he did his worst and did it thoroughly. Assuredly, the Tribune has the Standard's best wishes. But its recent career has seemed to indicate that it was living in mighty bad company, com-pany, and those who undertake to make it as good and as estimable as it used to be will discover, we suspect, that it is a good deal easier to tear down than to build up. |
