Infornalloo Aik Sa Your Dodor Your Hoart Awoclalloft Cigarettes, elevated blood pressure, diabetes and heredity are prime members of the heart-killisyndicate. But you can act to foil them. For millions of men and women, cigarette smoking has marked one major change in our habitual way of life since World War I, with cigarette consumption increasing about 500 per cent in that time. And whether we like it or not, investigations during the last dozen years have turned up ominous statistical evidence that cigarette smokers increase their risk of premature heart disease by three to six times over The risk rises with both the amount and duration of cigarette smoking, and with inhaling. But these studies find, too, that smokers who stop before they become ill also reduce their added risk. The authoritative report of the Advisory Committee to the U.S. Surgeon General declared "it is established that male cigarette smokers have a higher death rate from coronary artery disease than nonsmoking males. There is as yet little definitive understanding as to how cigarette smoking affects the heart detrimentally. g The tip of importance to all men who quit that is smokers cigarette are found to have less risk, approaching the status of those who never smoke. American men Deaths of middle-age- d and women due to high blood pressure declined 44 per cent between' 1950 and ng not because I was looking for the boys. Be patient and sweet in a couple of years theyll be looking for you. Happenings mnmnapangsrmrrewwwriririi For many weeks we have heard farmers, ranchers, gardeners, and othersexpress their wishes that it would rain. Some of them have even gone far enough to PRAY for rain. In another part of the state where this same situation has been prevalent it was revealing to note the reactions when their rain finally arrived. It was on a Sunday morning and people of the communities in that area were just leaving Sunday School when the deluge arrived. You should have heard the complaints. If anyone had questioned them, they would have been quick to confess that they did want rain and they in many cases wanted it badly, but, they wanted it to rain gently during the night when it would cause them no inconvenience or concern. This seems tobe just plain human nature I guess. We have definite wants, but we also have definite specifications as to how and when they are fulfilled. Take the married couples who have wanted children for years. Most of them are delighted with either boys or girls, but there are always those who would have preferred a boy first, (or visa versa), or twins, or dark hair instead of red like its grandma. It reminds me of the fellow who had coaxed his wife to make some pies. She felt that they werent good for people, but after his prodding she had finally broken down and baked an apple, coconut cream, and blueberry. As he wolfs the coconut cream one down and eyes the other two he was heard to say to his son, I kinda had my heart set on some cherry pie. Its surprising the way people have unrealistic ideas about various things. Those who marry young often have the idea that getting married is going to be a wonderful, delightful adventure, everything coming up roses, but they soon find that most roses have a good many thorns, and most marriages have a lot tif problems connected with them sooner or later, and probably sooner. Life is somewhat like a blind date. Usually the person arranging the date is enthusiastic, but somewhat vague about how the date really looks etc. As the one contemplating the date thinks about and looks forward to it, he is apt to imagine the date as being like his dream gril in looks and actions and ideals and is often disenchanted with the real thing, because of his imaginative outlook. Im sure that most people at least some time in their life wish they had a million dollars, and contemplate the things they could do with it, and the changes they could make in their home, community or the nation. But observing human nature and knowing how they have a way of wanting things just so and having their minds set on things being a certain way I think Id be safe in making a little bet. Im sure that some of them if given a check for a million dollars would make the observation that they were a little disappointed because they had always thought of it in terms of stacks of ten or twenty dollar bills. Sometimes, (in fact, usually), its hard to please people, in fact, in some cases it's impossible, so I guess all we can do is to roll with the punches and be flexible. And not be too determined about the way we THINK everything and everyone should be. As the teenager would probably say be thinkful for little flavors. Wednesday, July 9, 1969 Anytime is Chowder Time Caught without a luncheon menu? Or, even a dinner idea! Look no further than your freezer and a package of fish fillets. Chowders, like soups all over the world, are based upon one of the varieties of life, namely, that man eats what is accessible especially when it is free. And thats exactly how the fish chowder became so popular on the seashore where it originated. Of course, now that very few of us are catching or producing our food stuffs, we must of necessity turn to those items that coincide with modern living. Frozen fish fillets, stored ready for home-us- e are the answer to quick and wonderful chowders. Fresh or frozen vegetables, plus nutritious whole milk are the remaining ingredients in chowder preparation. Perfect for lunch with crackers or for a late supper, chowders offer wonderful eating anytime of the year. FISH CHOWDER cup (V4 stick) butter cup thinly sliced onion cup cubed raw potato 1 cup sliced raw carrot 1 cup water 2 teaspoons salt, divided Yg teaspoon pepper 1 pkg. (1 lb.) frozen haddock, defrosted and cut into cubes 3 cups milk Yg teaspoon leaf rosemary teaspoon leaf thyme 1 cup light cream 2 tablespoons flour Melt butter; add onion, potato, carrot, water, 1 teaspoon salt and pepper. Cover and simmer until carrot is almost tender, about 15 minutes. Add fish, milk, herbs and remaining 1 teaspoon salt; heat to simmering and cook until fish flakes easily. Blend together light cream and flour; add to chowder and heat thoroughly. Makes 8 cups chowder, enough for 8 to 10 servings. 1 1 not know it. But diabetes can almost always be controlled, especially when detected early, through urine or blood testing, before the disease can seriously harm blood vessels and organs. Diabetes to some extent may be a genetic or inheritable disorder, and some research indicates the hereditary in- fluence may be quite significant. So be especially alert if one or both parents or . close relatives have been diabetics. If a grandfather or father or uncle died from a heart attack or stroke at age 85, and had lived a full life, thats scarcely a significant sign of a family tendency toward high risk. What happened to your relatives is meaningful - in a negative sense - only if they died prematurely from the penalties of atherosclerosis, at age 40 or 50 or 60. Heart specialists and geneticists gen- erally agree that there is some hereditary in artherosclerosis. But no specific gene is known that causes it. Probably at least 80 per cent of the familial tendency can be accounted for by habits or tendencies to such risks as obesity, hypertension, excessive blood cholesterol, diabetes, heavy smoking and inactivity. If blood pressure and wight, cholesterol and sugar metabolism are normal, and you dont smoke, its very likely you can relax and forget about family tendency provided you. keep those risks factors under control. influence Americans in good health can be blood donors now until their 66th birthday instead of the 60th or 61st as in the past. A joint announcement of this liberalization of medical standards for blood was recently made by the American Association of Blood Banks and by the American National Red Cross in Washington D.C. The two organizations together collect and process 90 per cent of the more than 6,500,000 pints of blood used annually for surgery and therapy in U.S. hospitals. This extension of the eligible age limit for blood donors is in recognition of two facts, explained Dr. Frank Coleman of Tampa, Florida, President of the Association. First, that the need for blood is constantly increasing at a rate of about 12 per cent annually. Second, that, thanks to better medical care, better nutrition and other factors, American are living longer and also keeping their health and vigor longer than in the past. Dr. Tibor J. Greenwalt, Medical Director of the American National Red Cross Blood Program, emphasized that any healthy person can give a pint of blood without worry. He said, We have many donors who have given 11, 12 and 13 gallons of blood without incident. Most of these are eager and able to continue giving. The change will permit them to do so except in jurisdictions where it is contrary to local regulations., Donors 66 years of age or over, under the new AABB and ARC policies, may continue to give blood if they obtain the written consent of their. personal physician Rosalind Dear Rosalind, Ive always thought I wanted my husband to help me with our lot. You know like weed, plant, and plan the flowers. How mistaken I was. This year he has taken over! He has moved everything I have planted for the past ten years. He is still bringing home shrubs and flowers and its the middle of June. He has dug up patches of lawn everywhere and planted shrubs and flowers. Its maddening!! Our marriage What can I do?has really suffered. Bewilderd Dear Bewilderd, It sounds to me like you have a very dramatic gardener at your house. ConIf I were you I think I gratulations!! would withdraw. I would praise him highly. I would bake him a special pie. I would invite all his friends to a lawn party. Why? Because a marriage that looks good is worth 100 times as much as a lot that looks good! Let him give it a try. You tnight even find hes pretty good at it. Rosalind Rite Rosalind Dear Rosalind, Im 13 years old. My girl friends and I like boys pretty well, but the boys dont seem to like the girls too much. They like to talk to us, but if we want to talk we have to go where the boys are. Lots of times we go to their baseball games and we go to the show on Friday, and so do the boys. My mom says it looks like were just a bunch of boy chasers. I can't see where its chasing boys to just talk to them, we really dont date or anyWhat do you think? thing like that. - Mixed Up Dear Mixed Up, Its very natural for a 13 year old girl to want to talk to boys and I dont suppose there is anything wrong with that. It is also natural for 13 year old boys to like to play ball better than chase girls. So Id say that you are all acting naturally, but there is something very special about There is a wonderful being pursued. comes if your special boy that feeling friend comes to seek out you for his very special girl. I think youll miss a wonderful feeling if you make yourself too available. Boys dont usually start really looking for THE GIRL until theyre 16 or 17, by then most of them are sick of the stickey little girls that have followed them around for 3 or 4 years. If you like ball games Id go, if you like shows Id go, but I would go because I like the activity . on the day of donation. Donors must be in good health, have normal temperature, pulse andblood pressure, and meet the other requirements for blood donors, Individuals should check with their local community or hospial blood bank or Red Cross blood center relative to their eleigibility to give blood. State laws generally require blood donors to be 21 years old or to have parental consent to give between 18 and 21, but a number of states, including, California, Kansas, Washington, New York, Indiana, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Oregon, recently enacted legislation permitting those 18 to 21 to give without CLEARANCE OW FOPO CARS "TRlX&S njTO BAiJe SMITH a)H8? parental consent. In some states those of this age who can give blood must be and living away from home. Support our local Blood Bank at the Payson City HospitaL Blood is a constant need to meet the demands of our area. President Wilson W. Sorensen in making this announcement, stressed that this is the first time that a two-ye- ar technical college has been accredited. The decision means that students at the College will now be eligible to have credits earned at Utah Tech transferred to other institutions of higher learning. Dr. James F. Bemis, executive director of the Commission on Higher Schools, in- -. formed President Sorensen of the decision. The unanimous decision of the commission is a reflection upon the high standards established by the Provo school. A visitation team from the Northwest Association came to Provo in May to review teaching techniques, facilities, and programs of Utah Technical College. The commission, in making its decision in Seattle, inquired heavily into the philosophy of Utah Tech and was satisfied that: the College met the high standards of the association. The only way to know you are keeping your pressure under control is through regular checkups. Researchers have detected specific causes involving the kidneys and adrenal glands for example - and how to control them. The physician can almost find a drug, or comtination of drugs, to reduce elevated blood pressure. The successful counterattack also in- -, volves attention to diet, to weight, and to other risks, such as diabetes.
