Show THE LORDS SUPPER TUE SUBJECT OP BISHOP J E BOOTHS DISCOURSE ue dwells upon the importance of the sacrament the ansual sabbath services of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints were hold in the house on sunday afternoon at 2 president A 0 presiding prayer aras offered by elder evan choir eans again we meet the board of basug our redeeming lord the sacrament sacra meat was by tho bishopric of the third ward BISHOP E BOOTH prefaced his remarks by reading the following from tho chapter of luke commencing at the ath verse then came the day of unleavened bread when the passover must be killed and ha bent peter and john baying go and prepare us the paa that e may eat and they eaid unto him where wilt thou that we prepare and be bald unto them behold when ye are entered into the city shall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water follow him into the house ho en in and ye shall say unto tha bood man of unto thee where is the guest chamber where I 1 shall cat the passover with my disciples and he shall shew you a largo upper room furnished there make ready and they went and found as he had said unto them and thoy made ready the and when the hour come he sat down and the twelve apo atlea with him and lie said unto them with desire I 1 have desired to eat this passover you before I 1 buffer for I 1 say unto you I 1 will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of god and he took the cup and gave thanks and said take this and divide it among yourselves for I 1 say unto you I 1 will not drink of th e fruit of the vine until ane kingdom of god shall come aad he took bread and gave thanks and brake it and gave unto them saying thia is my body wl sh is given for you this do in remembrance of me likewise also the cup after supper baying this cup is the now testament m my blood which is shed for you it occurred to in that tho pas I 1 have just read were somewhat applicably to u thia afternoon I 1 tho important position I 1 occupy in tu the people and beace want to address you under the inspiration of the holy ghost the occasion I 1 hava read to you about is I 1 presume tho first occasion of the kind recorded and in commemoration of it we pass around the bread and water this afternoon all OUK denominations do mt understand tho solemnity and true purpose of this sacrament as wo can readily see if wo will only make tha question a study considerable ligat is thrown upon the object of this ordinance by the prayer that was revealed reve in this day that is to be used in the administration of this thera are not many instances where the lord has revealed the precise language we have got to use in supplicating him all that I 1 at present kemem her ia the prayer over the sacrament and that used in administering the ordinance of baptism so very important is it that we use the tory ax at words revealed in the administering of the sacrament that god commanded the saints through his cervant president brigham young that it was better to have tho prayer printed and read rather than the adders use their own words the prayer used ia the blessing of the I 1 presume the finest and simplest prayer ever uttered except it ba the lords prayer it is eo con cisa that wo cannot leave out evea one word without spoiling the bensa of the prayer and this is reasonable when we reflect upon it for I 1 do not know that any one is better qualified than the lord himself to give us a form of prayer we can take the lords prayer for instance how beautiful and grand yet how I 1 believe tho lord speaks in a language so that all his children can understand him this may possibly give us tho key to tho wonderful instance recorded in the second chapter of acts where people from all parts wore gathered together on the day of pentecost we find that on that day and the holy ghost rested upon him and under ita influence he spoke so that every man understood the words ho uttered in his own dongus which fact caused the laople to marvel undoubtedly peter saoko the natural tongue the language of god himself the language that was universal before tho confounding of tongues at the tower of babel this is something that we probably wonder at sever having though fc about it bufore ow take tha brut creation as another illustration tra tion you will find that all the animals understand each other why simply b their language has never bao n confounded A man from greenland man meet another man from patagonia their doab will perchance got acquainted in less than three minutes ant it would probably take three years for the men to get so as they could understand each other and so it is whenever we hear the true or natural language wo will understand it as readily as did the jowa oa tha day of pentecost hence the lord had an object in th prayer to be used in administering tho sacrament it takes the spirit of godio understand the of god it is somewhat similar the saying of jesus as re verso of the f anth chapter of john where it bays and other sheep I 1 have which are not of this fold them also I 1 mast bring and they shall biear my voice and there shall be one feld and one shepherd I 1 have never heard that verse explained outside of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints the infidel has found in it a very safe subterfuge for his position we must have the spirit of god to be with us in order that we may successfully defend the gospel of our lord I 1 hold that we make a very solemn promise in partaking the sacrament when we say we are willing to take upon us the name of his son that we may always remember him and kaep his commandments which he has given us that wo may always have his spirit to be with us some may ah but I 1 promise anything of the kind I 1 even listen to the prayer that was offered then why you you certainly acted very wrong if you did not the elder that offers the prayer supplicates es to the father for all those to whom the sacrament is administered baying 0 god the eternal father uc ask thee in tho name of thy son to bless and sanctify this bread to tho bouls of all those who partake of it hence the elder prays for all of us he is our agent ho is our mouthpiece and we have as you might say authorized him to happli cate tt the father in our behalf the great blessing that the saints ask for in this prayer is that they may always have his spirit to bo with them that is what we want and honce we ask for it through tho agent or mouthpiece who intercedes for us in the eleventh chapter of first corinthians int hians we find the following for I 1 have received of the lord that which also I 1 delivered unto yeu that the lord jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he brake it and said take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do in remembrance of me after the samo manner also he took the cup when he had cupped supped saying this cup is the new testament in my blood this do ye as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me for as often aa ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do shew tho lords death till he come wherefore whosoever shall cat this bread and drink this cup of the lord unworthily sh allbe guilty of the body and blood of tha lord but lot a maa examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup for ha that leateth and drinkuth drin keth unworthily leateth and drinkuth drin keth damnation to himself not discerning the lords body now although there is a great blessing attached to the sacrament when partaker partaken par taken of worthily yet wo find also by the foregoing j is a great condemnation by the words of christ contained on the page of the book of monaca it would seem that wo should not partake of this ordinance unless we are at peace with all and feel that we could ask the lords blessing upon all the world unless we fool like this wa had better leave the sacrament alone if we come here free from malics free from hatred from ellwill ill will and partake of tho sacrament sas worthily we will then be in a proper condition to receive of the spirit of god wo may not be doing as well as we aro able but we are commanded to do better wo know we are the people of god and honce we hav got to do the works of god we have probably boen in the habit of prayers ws have our tithing and have not kept the word of wisdom but god is a god of oh arity and forbearance and he will overlook our negligence if we only manifest a spirit of repentance and determination to do better it is truo the kingdom of god of which we form apart will never be thrown down or givon to another people yet we have got to live BO that we will have the spirit of god with us that we may bo able to withstand every tempest through which it passes the choir sang the anthem holy lord god of aoth benediction was pronounced by |
