Show SHOULD BE ATTENDED TO. A special telegram from Washington to the Chicago Inter-Ocean says it is now settled that the nomination of General Dement to be Surveyor-General for Utah will be rejected by the Senate. On what authority this statement is made the correspondent cor-respondent does not say ; probably it was stipulated by those from whom he received re-ceived his "pointer" that the source of his information should not be made public. Anyhow, we are inclined to think that the statement is made upon good authority. An opportunity is now presented for the Democrats of Utah to secure the appointment ap-pointment to office of a local candidate ; in any event, they should make it their business to see that the matter is prop-q prop-q erly laid before the appointing power. Prior to General Dement's nomination, two or more local aspirants sent in applications appli-cations for the office. One candidate, at least, was very strongly endorsed for the position, his papers showing that almost without exception the prominent Democrats Demo-crats of Utah were at his back, j Ihe President, however, for reasons best known to himself, saw fit to go outside out-side of the Territory to select atoan ; and now that time has proven the total unfitness unfit-ness of the Nominee to. hold Jiny public office, it is o'nly reasonable to suppose that in appointing his successor the Executive Ex-ecutive will be willing that the Democracy De-mocracy of the ( locality where the offi- cial's services are to be rendered, shall share with him the responsibility which attaches to the endorsement and appointment appoint-ment of a man, to Jiold a public trust. The President may rest assured that the Democrats of Utah . will recommend to him for office none but good men, thoroughly thor-oughly qualified to discharge the duties of the positions to which their appointment appoint-ment may be asked. : v Let the necessary steps' be taken 'immediately 'im-mediately to draw attention of the proper authorities to the papers, "now on file, of local applicants for the Surveyor-General's office. The appointment to office of a bona-fide resident of the Territory would, it is true, be a novel departure in the case of Utah, but it would be fully appreciated by the local Democracy. |
