Show THE OUTLOOK FOR SILVER. The whole country seems to be aaogon the silver question, and it is now pretty definitely settled that no Congressional legislation uf a hostile nature against the white metal is possible at the present session. ses-sion. - Telegrams from Washington state that by a vote of 7 to 5, the House Cora-. Cora-. mittee on Coinage,' Weights and Mea-j ' sures yesterday reported back adversely i Mr. Bland's bill for unlimited coinage of I silver dollars. The friends of silver j doubtless looked for such action on the . part of the committee, and few have any hope that the measure will receive favor-. favor-. able consideration in the House. But one thing clearly appears in this connection, - and that is, while it may not be possible at tire present time to secrjre the passage of a bill providing for unlimited coinage of silver, it will be impossible for any measure to get through the House that has for its object the suspension of silver coinage. ' " , We notice, too, that several European and Asiatic nations. now laboring under the evils which a single standard has brought upon them, are anxious to enter into such negotiations as will enable them to increase their circulations by resorting re-sorting to the double standard system. This naturally causes much uneasiness in the ranks of the mono-metallists, whose sole object is and has been, for their own personal gain, to keep down the volume of the monetary circulations of their respective countries, the better that they could count upon a greater demand for their hoarded wealth. - Even China and Japan, so the telegraph tele-graph tells us, now favor the adoption of a dnnblft stand nrJ f!hina's monetary system is based on" silver, but Japan has clung to gold. - In the light of present developments, it is clear that no country can prosper under the single standard B3rBtem. And as the gold product of the world is year by year growing beautifully smaller and smaller, what alternative is there, except to use silver. The outlook for the white metal is brighter to-day than it has been for many a year. |
