Show Heartless Cruelty to a Stowaway. New Yobk, February 17. William Rutherford Ruther-ford is 20 years old, and he claims a home and farm near Columbus, Ohio. He has been roaming vest from that point this winter, win-ter, and five days ago he found himself in Dayton, Ohio. He found some freight cars on a siding, said to be bound to Columbus. He secreted himself in one loaded with corn. It was afterwards closed and bolted, and the stowaway,- eating corn to satisfy hunger, but having no water to drink, the journey began. Alter a day and night of travel, Rutherford concluded Columbus must have been reached, and at some stopping place he shouted and attracted attention. He said he wanted to get out, but railway orders forbid opening the car between the point of shipment ship-ment and its destination, and the car was bound to New York. The young man ar rived here this morning, and is now in the hospital, his feet so badly frozen they will doubtless be amputated. He suffered tortures tor-tures for the lack of drink on the trip. |
