Show EICHES FROM THE NORTH. Oold Dust From the Sweet Grass . Placers Received lu Helena The first practical argument as to the richness of the placer mines in the S weet Grass Hills is the shipment of gold dust received yesterday by the Merchants National Na-tional Bank of this city, says the Helena Herald, of the 28th ult. The shipment was made by three different parties in the Hills and comprises in all thirty-five ounces of dust, both native gold and retort. - The gold is coarse grained and carries nuggets varying in value from ten cents to five dollars. The gold runs about $18 per ounce. N This is the first gold shipment of any size received here from the Sweet Grass Hills, and confirms the statements made as to the existence of the precious metal there. These hills are a cluster of rocky and timbered buttes, rising out of the prairie separate and distinct from any range of mountains. In this respect they are similar to the famous Black Hills of Dakota. They lie in the extreme north of Montana ""only a short distance from the boundary line. They are situated in the reservation for the Gros Ventre Indians, In-dians, and are distant 120 miles northwest from Fort Benton. Though in an Indian reservation, the mines are worked by white men, who still pursue their labors undisturbed by any interference on that score. I '. L :. ' : - -: |
