Show THE CITY COUNCIL. The Business Transacted , at the meeting-Last Night. ' The Council convened at the usual hour. - ' ; John W. Young, President of the Salt Lake & Fort Douglas Railroad company, I through Arthur Stayner, communicated I to the Council that he would see that the damage done to Eight South street by the grade being thrown up would be remedied. The Marshal was instructed to enforce tho obligations of the railway company to the city. . David Love, Sr., was, on application, granted a free merchant's license for one year. The administrators of the estate of Horace Gibbs petitioned for a rebate of $54 on city taxes, the same being claimed to be an excessive tax and was not presented pre-sented to the Board of Equalization. Referred Re-ferred to the Committee on Claims. . " P. O. Thomassen asked to be given a deed from the Mayor to his lot on the Dry Bench. Referred to the Committee on Public Grounds. J. A. Fitzgerald was granted a renewal of his retail liquor license for three months. The Mayor submitted a statement of the disbursements from his contingent fund for the last six months. The cost of defending Policemen Thomas and Hilton, on a charge of assault with intent to kill "the coon," was $250, and the expense, of the investigation by the Council into the rumors that were afloat When Battery B. arrived in the city was $190,10, making mak-ing a total of $440,10. The Council voted on an appropriation of $76,90 to cover the deficiency. City Attorney Richards reported that nine cases had been appealed from the Police Court to the District Court. He had got them dismissed and suggested that the fees be advanced by the city. An appropriation of $72 was voted for that purpose. The committee to whom wa3 referred the Sexton's report recommended that $G6 be appropriated to the Sexton's relief re-lief for money paid to the Treasurer on uncollectible bill. The report was adopted, adopt-ed, and on motion of Alderman Speirs the sense of the Council was that hereafter here-after the Sexton shall give nb title to lots sold until fully paid for. The Water "Works Committee recommended recom-mended the approval of the Superintendent's Superinten-dent's last quarterly report fand the appropriation ap-propriation of $111,50 to cover the deficiency. de-ficiency. Adopted. The Committee on Fire Department recommended the approving and filing of the quarterly reports of Chief Ottinger made by him last spring and again in the summer. The reports were adopted. Mr. Ferdinand Dickert on behalf of the Dickert & Myers Sulphur company, presented pre-sented the Council with twenty-one sacks of refined sulphur (nearly a ton) to be used as a disinfectant in the citv. Thn generous gift was accepted with thanks, and on motion of Councilor Jennings will be distributed in the city bv the Quarantine Quaran-tine Physician. " ' " - . Geo. Stringfellow addressed the Council Coun-cil a few minutes, urging the necessity of the Council establishing public urinals and water closets in the heart of the citv. His motion to refer it to the Committee on Publis Improvements with the Mayor associated, was lost. Alderman Waddell presented a bill of j $50 for searching records and hunting up the title to the land in'City Creek canyon recently purchased by the city appropriations. To Mrs. M. A.
