Show Halleck Did Say It. Philadelphia, February 2. The Press' Washington special says: The now f amous telegrams said to have been exchanged between be-tween General McClellan and General Halleck Hal-leck just subsequent to the surrender of Fort Donelson, which were published a few days ago, were to-day taken to General Frederick T. Dent, a brother-in-law of Grant and a member of his staff. He said: "I have no desire to enter into a controversy, but will say those telegrams are substantially substan-tially correct. I cannot give their dates, but it was some time not long after the surrender sur-render of Donelson. The telegram' of McClellan Mc-Clellan was substantially as given. I do not think Halleck answered on the same day, but when he did answer, his telegram contained con-tained other matter. The closing words of the dispatch were as follows: 'In reply to your telegram of , would say, I don't know; somewhere in the rear of his army, was drunk.' " . |
