Show UNLAWFUL COHAB. IS IDAHO. The Kind of a man the New Chief Justice Ys. A Blackfoot correspondent of the "Wood River Times, writing under date of October Octo-ber 24th, says: During the last week thirteen members of the Church of Latter-day Saints have been convicted of unlawful cohabitation. Said one of these convicted ones to the court yesterday, wanting to find out whether sentence was likely to consist of fine, or fine and imprisonment : "Judge, had I better go home and get my affairs in order ; had I better prepare to leave ?" The Judge gave him one look, and said in a tone of thunder : "Prepare !" Chief Justice HayB is the legal divinity that shapes the ends of justice rough as the Mormons think hereabouts. He is a magnificent specimen of manhood, standing six feet -six inches in hight, correspondingly broad of girth, and tips the beam at 265 pounds ; in ;complexion clear and ruddy, with gray eyes pleasant in'repose; a prominent nose, large mouth and firm-set lips. Hays looks the combined com-bined sturdy Scotch-Irishman that he is. His hair is liberally sprinkled with gray, and stands erect and bushy like Jackson'sand Jack-son'sand when he stopped a Mormon attorney last week, who was insisting that polygamy had only been a crime since the passage of. the Edmunds law. and said in tones of thunder that "polygamy "poly-gamy had always been unlawful in this country, and that he did not want to hear any more such rot in his court," that attorney at-torney knew that it would not be safe to "monkey" with the court. In his court the edicts of the "fathers" and the constitution of the United States, have greater weight than the edicts of David and Solomon, and the indorsements indorse-ments given to the infamous practices of these men by Bible and Latter-day revelation. But the crisis is here the irrepressible conflict is upon us. Monogamy Monog-amy and polygamy cannot exist side by side in the Republic. The foundation of the Republic is built upon the hearthstone hearth-stone of happy homes, where woman's love and woman's purity are enshrined as its holiest homilies and mother our mother is the holy of holies; the lode-stone lode-stone that brings back every wanderer to the shelter of the roof-tree of home at last. One wife, one family, one country, must be the watchword of the Republic. |
