Show CONSIDERING CITY BUSINESS. Petitions and Beports Before the - Council Last Nigrht New Contract Con-tract With the Gas Company. There was a full attendance of councilors council-ors at the sessionj.iast evening, and the following business was disposed of : A petition from Eli Folland and 137 other residents and taxpayers in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth wards was read, praying that South Temple street from the Utah Central depot 'along the Utah & Nevada track to Eighth West street be graveled and graded. Referred to the Committee on Streets and Alleys;' From L. P. Kelsey, C. 0. Whittemore and a number, of other residents, on Second Sec-ond East street from Fourth to Sixth ! South streets,' praying that: the : water mains be extended to Sixth South street. The petitioners set forth substantial . reasons rea-sons for said extension and agreed to - advance ad-vance $750 if required so to do. Committee Com-mittee on Water Works. From Agnes Swartz and 135 other residents resi-dents of. the Fourteenth ward, mostly females, asking that the sidewalk on First South street, froni the, Continental; Hotel. . to the school-house, be put in good repair. Committee on Streets and Alleys. From John Muzzell, soliciting the appointment ap-pointment to the position of City Weign-niaster Weign-niaster and Poundkeeper, Committee on Elections. .. From Eliza Durnell, asking that a free license for six" months to peddle fruit be granted to her son. 4 Xicense Committee. From Lucy M. Deveraux (W. D. New-som's New-som's polygamous wife), praying for one year's free license to carry on her general merchandise business at 875 East Third South street, since she and her child were in needy circumstances. W., Brown, "a friend of the widow," praying to be granted a six months' free license to sell butter in this city. Granted. F. S. Richards, City Attorney, on behalf be-half of ex-Mayor Sharp and the old Board of Aldermen, stated that the Legislative Assembly had been petitioned for the needful amendments to the city charter. The Chief of the Fire Department stated that during the -last quarter there were six fires in the city, involving a total loss 1 of $600, with an insurance of $300.: 'The contingent expenses in the department for the three months were $448.67, leaving leav-ing a deficit of $48.67. Committee on Fire Department. The City Auditor submitted a tabulated statement of the city's finances, including its current resources and liabilities, for the information of the new Council. The report was a recapitulation of the last report of the finances of the city, as published pub-lished last December. The bonded debt of the city is $199,500, and the floating debt $80,000, with a good amount in the sinking fund. The Auditor calculated that this year's income would about equal last year's, viz. : $175,000 in round num- bers. ' APPROPRIATIONS. ' To Davis, Howe & Co., 17 lamp posts. . $119.00 To Marshal's contingent fund 700.00 To Fire department's contingent fund, 100.00 Total $919.00 The Marshal was instructed to furnish the Council members with the necessary stationery and the usual et-ceteras. . The Committee on Elections, with the Mayor associated, was authorized to make the nominations for the various appointive appoin-tive city officers. The Finance Committee, together with the Mayor, was instructed to fix the salaries of the city officers. The Committee oii Improvements, with the Mayor, was given the duty of entering enter-ing into a new contract with the Gas Company Com-pany to light the city, the old contract having just expired. The Council adjourned for one week. |
