By CHERIE HUBER It was the last day of February according to the calendar, but the activities in Bountiful Elemen-tary's Elemen-tary's first grade classes made everyone feel sure it was the Fourth of July, complete with picnic. The picnic came at the end of a special month long program designed de-signed to promote patriotism. During the first week of February Febru-ary the children learned about America's symbols including the Bald Eagle, Uncle Sam, the Liberty Liber-ty Bell, the American flag, and the Statute of Liberty. During the following weeks the children also heard stories about Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and stories of other American heros presented by the parents. In addition, the children learned many patriotic songs during the month. Kurt Walker from the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind taught the children to "sing" the song, "Stand Up for America." ! The month's activities ended with an old-fashioned Fourth of July picnic with everything but the ants. The goal of the program was to increase the children's knowledge but also to develop a deep love for their country. Heidi Bailey, a first grade teacher at Kaysville Elementary, Elemen-tary, engineered the picnic. First grade teachers at Bountiful Elementary are Faye Peterson, Joy Homer, Sharon Phillips and Dau-neen Dau-neen Able. |
