| Show I THE LOUD ALARUM BELLS j c Graham COK Establishment and Andrews SeccmdKnnd Store Furnish Food for the Flames At 030 1 oclock last night the city fire alarm pealed forth so vigorously that other bells joined in the chorus and within twenty minutes hundreds of men women and children from every place within hearing congregated on First South between Main and First West streets where clouds of smoke were issuing issu-ing from the row of buildings a quarter quar-ter of a block cast of the Deseret bank The seat of fire seemed to be in the secondhand sec-ondhand and notion store of A H Andrews i I An-drews Co next to the real estate office of Mr Kelsey I In a creditably short time after the alarm the firemen were on the spot and diligently at work to arrest the progress of the flames and aid in saving as many goods within as it was possible to get at Parties standing by gave a helping hand carrying out goods and Mr Will Culmer came near losing his life by swooning in I the paper room of Graham Companys while after a last armful of goods He was picked up and carried out in a semiconscious semi-conscious state Kelseys office became ignited but a steady stream of water putout put-out the blaze and kept the fire from the livery stable at the west The wind was favorable t the efforts of the firemen and they kept the blaze confined to the starting place with but little misdirected labor Mr Andrews bad two fingers of his left hand nearly severed by a broken pane of class falling across his band Dr Benedict Bene-dict dressed the injured member and the unfortunate sufferer from fires was about the streets today unable to gather up the few remnants remaining of his stock A review of Grahams premises this morning shows the cellar less damaged than was expected last night The presses are injured but slightly and can be repaired re-paired at 150 expense The type was melted and completely ruined Nothing worth mentioning was rescued from either building although the men worked in the stifling smoke to save the contents farthest from the flames The firemen took up their return march a trifle too soon and an overlooked mass of smouldering paper at the rear broke out anew into a mass of flames which were extinguished by the lingering crowd of volunteers The loss sustained is some less than estimated last night and given in the morning papers Graham Co claim their loss to be 5000 with a 2000 insurance net loss 3000 Andrews Co loss 2200 insurance 1000 net loss I 1200 Tom ennings loss on buildings 1600 insurance 1500 net loss 100 Total loss 8800 insurance 3500 net loss 5300 |
