Show A CHAT WITH GENERAL BOWMAN Our New SurveyortSeiiern1 Assumes the Control of the Office W G Bowman the new Surveyor General of Utah who wasappointed to succeed suc-ceed Mr Dement arrived in the city two I or three days ago but has been so indisposed indis-posed since he reached here that he could I not be seen by our reporter On Monday the General visited the i i office and found that things as far as he i was able to see in his short stay were in first class condition I Yesterday afternoon Mr Cami the chief clerk of the office visited Mr Bowman I Bow-man in his room at the Walker House and the General then signed the papers i I necessary to his formal assmuption of the I I affairs of the office General Bowman was seen this morning morn-ing by a reporter of the DEMOCKVT whom he favored with a pleasant chat upon different subjects Mr Bowman Bow-man comes from the southern part of Illinois known in that vicinity as Egypt He is a lawyer by profession and has taken quite an active part in the local politics of his State His first public position was that of a County Judge in which office he served quite along a-long term during the earlier part of his public life Since then he served as a member of the Constitutional Convention of Illinois which body framed the new Constitution of that State Later he was elected to the Senate of the State Legislature Legis-lature and since his retirement from that office has lived quietly in the practice of his profession The SurveyorGeneral ship is the first Government position he has held and he expects to find the duties of his new office pleasant Mr Bowman was not in the best of health at the time he left home and the trip across the continent shook him up considerably so that it will be some days before he feels like himself again He was accompanied on his journey by his daughter Miss Kate and by his oldest son He is highly pleased with the city and as soon as he can find a suitable residence resi-dence he will send for the rest of his family The General is a very pleasant gentleman gentle-man to meet and is a pleasing contrast to his unlamented predecessor There is no doubt that both he and his family will make many pleasant acquaintances here and that his career in the important office will be a highly successful one I I |
