Show MORE OF IT Another Heavy Railroad Consolidation Con-solidation in Progress of Arrangement The Closely Contested Boat Race Between Be-tween Cambridge and Oxford Scotia Passengers Rescued Bismarck and the Tatican Russian War PreparationsThe Banks A Forfeit Paid t Cambridge Wins LONDON March 26 Cambridge won the university boat race LONDON March 26Just before the race the betting was 15 to 8 in favor of the Cambridge Cam-bridge crew When the crews launched their boats in readiness for the race the weather was freeirom rain LONDON March 26 The race was over the usual course on the Thames from Putney to Mortlake The wind was fresh and the water lumpy The Cambridge crew at onoe took the lead rowing with slightly more rapid strokes than Oxford At the end of the first mile the Cambridge boat was half a length ahead the race having been stubbornly contested all the way Oxford then spurted To this the Cambridge men responded instantly and effectively so that at Hammersmith Hammer-smith Bridge nearly two miles from the start they had increased their lead to a whole boat length Here Oxford again put on a burst and drew np but managed to out down only a part of the lead against them At Cheswick Oxford had improved their rowing so much that Cambridge men in their effort to retain their lead rowed a little wildly and finally splashed But they recovered themselves immediately and by a supreme effort made up their loss and regained re-gained their length of lead which had been somewhat curtailed although their boat rolled a good deal under the inequality in-equality of the efforts of the crew At Barnes Bridge three miles and five furlongs from the start Cambridge was leading by a length and a half After passing pass-ing the bridge the Oxford crew broke an oar that of course secured the race for the Cambridge men and they won easily by three lengths The race was a fine contest as far as Barnes Bridge being strongly contested every inchupto that point The Oxford crew pulled better together than their opponents did and it is agreed OH all hands that they lost by bad steering entirely en-tirely The time of the Cambridge crew was twenty minutes and fiftytwo seconds |
