Show r j THE WEST POINT CADETSHIP Three Young Utaltitc to Contest for the Honor of Uncle Sam B Epaulettes The preliminary examination of applicants cants for cadetship t the United States Military Academy at West Point was held today ait the University The examination ex-amination commlllee consisted of Dr W R Pike of the Territorial Asylum at Provo Dr Park of the Deseret University Univer-sity and Franklin D Richards City Prosecuting Attorney Tlie real purpose of this examination preparatory for appointment ap-pointment to the military school is to test the physical and mental abilities of an applicant to be recommended for the final examination West Point next June I is stipulated by the Secretary War that the applicants for the one position allowed each Territory be given an examination ex-amination at home i desired which will save the wouldbe cadets useless expense and an extra trip and possibly rejection at West Point The examination seems intended more especially to decide between be-tween the applicants fitness to become good cadets and developed soldiers than thin prestige in scholastic ability The questions propounded were entirely confined con-fined to common branches in the following follow-ing studies Reading of the Declaration of Independence Hamlets soliloquy and various selections of prose and rhyme Spelling punctuation and capitalization were considered con-sidered In arithmetic three practical problems were given which were very easy to solve In grammar three questions ques-tions in analysis were asked the contestants contest-ants Three questions in geography and three in United States history were asked Specimens of penmanshil were examined ex-amined which with a few aminec general questions ques-tions on civil government completed the test to the examination at West Point Dr Pike examined each of the half dozen applicants and passed three who were a required over five feet in height between 17 and 22 years of age unmarried free from any immoral disorder or deformity disease or impediment of speech deafness loss of teeth knockkneed or any such way unfit for the position The contestants for the cadetship are Joseph Young son of Brigham Young Jr John W Snell Jr and Lars B Eggerlson of Provo all three of whom are robust young men and physically possessed with the requirements require-ments needed Each of these young men are 10 years old and there is no tell ing which one will be successful or whether all three will fall short Young Powell of Fort Douglas sent in his name for entrance to the class but was refused on account of being hut 10 years of age The Secretary of War wired his father at Washington that he was under age for the present test Master Mas-ter Powell is said to nossess a fine nhvs ique and he has a firstclass education to meet such an examination but he could not enter the race this time There is no sure thing of an applicant passing roll at West Point if recommended recom-mended to the Secretary of War by the Delegate here after I preliminary examination ination as this questions at West Point I are rejected rigid nn1 many a young man returns |
