Show FOR THE FEDERAL OFFICIALS I I i Postmaster Dowling of Toledo Ohio I who is a lifelong Republican can no longer march in the ranks of that party I I I and assigns his reasons as follows I t I cannot indorse the Republican platform nor vote the ticket longer because the party continues to appeal to sectional passion while tho patriots who formed it never I shared in such feeling Time present leaders f are asking for its supremacy on the assumption j assump-tion that over half our citizens are enemies to the Government All patriots should ic buko this falsehood Tho paity has drifted into the hands of men of whom General Grant said They did not get enough fighting fight-ing during the war and are doing their I fighting now Men should not be deceived into believing that another rebellion is I t brewing when the air is voiced with a jubilee jubi-lee of peace and good will Ii For many years the platforms of the Republican party have rung out for economy I and purity of public service and yet when a man has been found who like President I Cleveland makes vital these very principles they turn round and denounce him as an enemy of the Government President Clove I lands courso as Governor is simply being I repeated on a grander scale every branch of the public service has profited by the reforms I I re-forms inaugurated and the result will be the t Having of millions of dollars to the people 1 1 and a better civil service in this country President Cleveland deserves the support of I every thinking American citizen irrespective irrespec-tive of party in what he is doing Holding tho view I do I must most emphatically decline de-cline to march in the socalled Republican 1 procession this fall I cannot obey the commands com-mands of such leaders and shall strenuously strenuous-ly resist every effort they may put forth to subvert good government and exalt themselves I i them-selves at thoorponso of a reunited country I i i That is true both in letter and spirit and as the Denver Vcrs pays shows that i j Mr Dowling seems to ba wise in his 1 I generation It is strange but such is I the fact that many a Federal office holder hold-er experiences a change of heart in regard re-gard to his politicks when the politics of I I I the ruling administration change For j I twentyfive years not a single Democrat 1 has had any chance or occasion to experience exper-ience any such change of heart but such changes are becoming quite noticeable among Republican Federal officials that retain their not they may I I 1 positions perish such a thought but that they may devote their 1 time And energies to the advancement of their countrys welfare No one will j I Ij doubt Postmaster Dowlings sincerity but if any do doubt it and he feels that I he owes it torhhnself to vindicate his sin ceritp he can as the Denver Yeas says t 1 I i 1L 1 > > t easily prove his good faith by resigning I his office and taking the stump for the Democratic ticket Let him go about among the people tolling them thecauses i which have led him from the errors of i Republicanism to the truths of Democ1 racy and he may be able to make many converts But he cannot do much good to the Democratic party or much harm to the Republican party by preaching from the postoffice 1 We commend this advice which is excellent ex-cellent and calculated for the best good both spiritual and temporal of all Fed I oral officeholders who may experience such strange sensations as the Toledo I postmaster has to the Federal officials of Utah No one doubts but that they are i devoted to their country and would be I j willing to do anything that might be for the good of their country even to dying i upon the field of battle Now if men are willing to go forth to battle and die that j their country may live why should not men and more especially those who are j serving the Government in some civil j capacity be willing to die for their country coun-try a la feb dc sc Some at least of the j Utah officials should take this course especially as they are resigned to their fate The suggestion is made to relieve the Republican Federal officials of a great burden and the Government too |
