Show i The Ballot Forgers Sentenced I I CHICAGO March 12In the United States Circuit Court this afternoon after I hearing I an elaborate argument for a new trial in the case of Joseph C Macken and I William Gallagher who were found I guilty in the celebrated Eighteenth Yard I election case Judge Blodgett at 440 pm denied the motion for a new trial I lIe then ordered the prisoners to stand before the bar and formally sentenced I each to two years imprisonment in Joliet and also imposed a fine of 5000 on each He then ordered them into the custody the United States Marshal and deferred the date of their removal to Joliet for ten days Neither man flinched when sentence sen-tence was pronounced Gleasons case was not disposed of as Leonard Swett wishes to present some arguments to the court The prisoners were then taken to the county jail and locked up Papers will probably be perfected tomorrow appealing j appeal-ing to Judge Gresham for a review of the I I case pending which the prisoners will I doubtless be released on bail again It is j believed the review by Judge Gresham is the last move which the prisoners can i make to delay or avoid punishment I |
