Show > OUR NEW QUARTERS The Democrat Moves Into Its Mammoth New Quarters iii the Wasntch Block II I I The Editorial Rooms the Composing Rooms the Business Office BookBindery I Bindery and Job Department II I I I The Growing Enterprise In Commodious Commo-dious Quarters In the Central Part of Town For many months past the growth of THE DEMOCRAT has been so marked as to make it evident that the old stand on the other side of Main street must be abandoned aban-doned and more commodious quarters sought Just where to move to was a difficult question to solve and it was not until a few days ago that the present location was decided upon and the work of making the necessary alterations was begun The extensive improvements improve-ments have at last been almost completed com-pleted and today TIlE DEMOCRAT issues for the first time from the new quarters THE BRAIN DEPARTMAXT Beginning on the second floor of the establishment the first places you come to at the head of the main hall are the editorial rooms Here in commodious light and bright quarters may be found the tables of the editorinchief the associate editor the telegraph editor and the city editor with spare room for reporters and friends who happen to drop around The sanctum when completed will be supplied with files books of reference refer-ence and all the appurtenances of a firstclass editorial room For the present we are comfortable and being in a good condition for growing we may pass to THE COMPOSING ROOMS Across the hall Here under the direction direc-tion of an energetic young foreman is found TIlE DEMOCRATS handsome corps of comps This department consists of two large rooms connected by a broad arched doorway Along the south side stand the cases while along the north side are the stones the foremans table batteries ete etc and in the east end is the elevator on which the forms are let down to the press room thirty feet below The place is supplied with a good flood of light from the south windows and with such surroundings the type stickers are sure to run up a bigger string than ever In the little hall which separates the composing room from the sanctum will be found a neat washstand and the cleanest of office towl to be found in any newspaper office in the land Here also is a staircase leading down to the apartment below THE BOOK BINDERY Across another little hallway to the north of the composing room are two more rooms fitted up with all the latest improved machinery for a firstclass book bindery which will be run in connection con-nection with the job department of the office THE BUSINESS OFFICE The spacious room on the ground floor just three doors east of the Wasatch corner cor-ner and facing north on Second South street is the business office of THE DEMOCRAT DEMO-CRAT Here the general business manager man-ager and his gentlemanly assistants will be found always ready for any sort of a transaction from the sale of a single copy of the paper up to a thousand dollar i dol-lar advertising or job printing contract The office is neatly arranged and is more commodious than the one at the old stand THE JOB DEPARTMENT About a week ago THE DEMOCRAT company com-pany purchased the mammoth job printing print-ing plant of Mr J C Parker and that gentleman has been employed as general superintendent of the mechanical workings work-ings of the office The plant consists of a complete outfit of presses cases type stationery eic and is acknowledged to be the most complete job office in the western country The next room to the rear will be used for stationery and a general gen-eral store room THE PRESS ROOM Descending to the basement a busy scene meets the eye Here in the front room may be seen five presses atone at-one time The huge Cottrell cylinder press upon which THE DEMOCRAT is struck off stands in the south end of the room and along toward the door the four job presses of different sizes are seen Here may be printed everything from the largest posters to the smallest calling call-ing card and it will be readily acknowledged acknowl-edged to be the finest press room in this region Behind this is the boiler room ink coal and wood cellars and general store rooms IN CONCLUSION It may be said that while the present improvements in TilE DEMOCRATS home are vast in extent they may be considered consid-ered as only one of the many evidences of the papers growth and this step maybe may-be considered only as the first of a long series which will lead up to the high pinnacle which THE DEMOCRAT can must I and will reach |
