Show RANDALL It is to be hoped that the report that the Democrats of Randalls district will reject him in the next nominating convention con-vention is true While his ability is conceded con-ceded there is no reason why he should be permitted longer to prostitute it at the altar of Republicanism He has masqueraded mas-queraded long enough as a Democrat while every effort was directed against one of the cardinal principles of that party Both parties in their last national conventions pledged themselves to tariff reduction Years ago the Republican Tariff Commission recommended a reduction reduc-tion of twenty per cent on the present war rates The Democrats in two Congresses since have sought to carry out the pledges of their party but the Republicans in the House aided by Randall and his few professed Democratic followers have defeated every attempt even to consider the subject This is notorious and it is equally notorious that these obstructionists obstruction-ists have offered upon their part no measure to reduce the burden or taxation taxa-tion upon the necessaries of life In consequence con-sequence of this donothing policy of the Republicans a surplus of more than 100000000 a year continues to be extorted ex-torted from the people and the country is growing restless under it The obstructionists ob-structionists began to see that something some-thing must be done to relieve themselves of the odium of sustaining the rapidly increasing surplus in the National Treasury Treas-ury To this end Mr Randall prepared pre-pared a bill for the total repeal of the tobacco tax This is proven by a letter which ho addressed to Speaker Carlisle asking recognition for the pur II posti of introducing his bill Mr Carlisle Car-lisle very properly refused to become a party to such a scheme The Democratic platform denounces the abuses of the existing tariff and demands heavier rates on articles of luxury and lighter on articles of necessity But Mr Randall held that the only abuses of the existing exist-ing tariff were the taxes on tobacco and that was the only tax whose repeal he would favor or consent to have discussed Here Mr Randall represented the Republican Re-publican and Mr Carlisle the Democratic Demo-cratic position Was there ever a country before that taxed its people to produce 100000000 year beyondthe needs of the government its legislators to squander Was there ever a country before that proposed to reduce the voluntary taxes on luxuries and articles of useless indulgence in-dulgence like whisky and tobacco which are only destructive industries leaving the over burdened necessaries untouched un-touched This is the Republican policy The Democratic party will never come to Mr Randall upon this proposition Let him go to the Republican Re-publican party whose policy is in harmony har-mony with his own Let him be no longer elected as a Democrat to represent repre-sent Republican interests and oppose Democratic principles |
