| Show I I MAXWELL BACK AGAIN 1 The Alleged Murderer of Preller Arrives S Ar-rives in St Louis Yesterday The Trunk Manufacturer Recognizes I 1 Him as the Man Who Bought the Box j He Is Unwilling to Talk to the Reporters I Re-porters Thinking That in Silence There is Safety i uxivellM Kcturii to St LOUiS ST Louis August 16Walter Lennox Maxwell alias T C Dangler alias Hugh M Brooks the supposed murderer of C Arthur Pieller at the Southern Hotel in this city on the 5th of last April arrived here about 7 oddok this morning from San Francinco in cTiarge of Detective Tracy and Officer I Badger of the St Louis police force A crowd of from 2000 to 3000 men women and children were at the depot when the train arrived and there was A OUKAT SOBVMBIE TO GET A VIEW OF TUE PRISONER But good order was preserved Maxwell and his custodians were met by Chief of Police Harrigan with a detachment of police and I were placed in a patrol wagon and driven to Four Courts where after a short stay in the detectives loom in the police headquarters he was put in hold over and is being held under an alias warrant which was sworn outlast out-last Friday by proper authority Accounts by reporters who rode in from Halstead Kansas on the train with Maxwell Max-well and had free access to him and to the officers in charge of him are to the effect that HP ABSOLUTELY HKFUSED TO TALK ABOUT HIS CASE And positively asserted that he has at no time or place made any statement in regard to it or in anyway acknowledged that ho had anything to do with Prellers murder or know anything about it He says all stories to the contrary are wholly untrue Detective Detec-tive Tracy also says that Maxwell has made no statement Maxwell wrote out while on the train for the reporter of the Republican an account of his trip from St Louis to Auckland his arrest there and return trip but it is a commonplace story of minor events and contains no information of interest inter-est Detective Tracy thinks that further developments will show Maxwell to be a weak man mentally but that he has got one idea wedged into his mind THAT HIS SAFETY DEPENDS ON HIS SILENCE And that he will startle nobody with a romantic ro-mantic defense Tracy thinks he killed Preller for money and that the few admissions admis-sions he made point in that direction that his voyage from St Louis to Auckland was a I moneyspending debauch and not a well I planned escape from justice and that it was the luck that attends drunkards and fools that stood him instead and not any good management of his own Maxwell was in Chief Harrigans office an hour or so this afternoon and a large number num-ber of callers were introduced to him butS but-S nothing regarding his case or what line of defense he will pursue was obtained from i him j BECOGNIZINO MAXWELL Charles Bieger the tmnkmaker reco < 7 i nized Maxwell as the man to whom he sold I tho trunk in which Prellers bodywas found and the porter at the Southern Hotel recognized recog-nized him as having been a guest at that i I hotel in April last Maxwell will be turned over by the police authorities tomorrow to I i the sheriff and will placed in jail What otherrlf any legal action will be taken has i i not yet been determined |
